Editorial Reviews

Review

"For anyone who has wanted to know exactly how an artist has paved her road to success, Creative Thursday is the book that offers an engaging and honest blueprint of how it happened for one and therefore how it can happen for many." --Jenny Doh, Crescendoh

"The thing I love most about Creative Thursday is that it isn't really just about illustrating or painting or for professionals or people who have their own 'crafting rooms.' Really, it's for anyone who enjoys creative pursuits and often needs a little nudge to get them going." --Cool Mom Picks

This is my new favorite book on creativity. It is treat for the eye, mind and soul. I read this book slowly over a hot cup of coffee every morning for a week, and when I finished I felt like I was ready to take my creative business to new heights. Marisa writes like a best friend who cheers you on and truly understands what it takes to be a thriving artist -- because she actually is one. If the words of advice and encouragement are not enough, the book is filled with incredibly beautiful images that a treat with every turned page. Buy this book if you are a creative person. Buy it to fulfill your dreams and share with your friends. A great find!

Format: Paperback
I started reading "Creative Thursday" on a Sunday morning, and by chapter two, "Moving Through (and Accepting) Resistance," I was struck by a simple piece of advice Marisa relates on pg. 19: "There are days when I literally have to take my arm and gently push away piles of papers on my desk...grab my (supplies)to start painting before I even take my morning shower, pour a cup of coffee, have breakfast, check an e-mail, make a bed, or speak to anybody. Sometimes I must decide to paint first. And that's all there is to it..."

I actually got out of bed, grabbed my pastels, and started a project that I had been procrastinating on for months. I finished it in FOUR days (usually pastel portraits take me months to complete due to second-guessing myself, getting too critical, etc. - she addresses all that too, btw) The idea that I didn't have to follow my usual morning routine and instead look at all hours of the day as possible creativity time was a TOTAL paradigm shift.

Marisa's simple observations, advice, and willingness to share her experiences (both struggles and triumphs) combine powerfully into a very persuasive, yet reasonable argument for making creativity part of your life. And not just your art/writing/whatever your medium, but your THINKING. How are you sabotaging your expression with self-judgment? She shares ways that she's softened the voice of her inner critic. How are you sabotaging your work with procrastination? Simple statements like the one above can cause seismic changes in how your view your routines.

"Creative Thursday" also goes into how to stay inspired, step outside your comfort zone, setting time limits, leveraging your creativity, and a host of other valuable pieces of advice. Looking for inspiration? Buy this book!

Then get out of bed and start creating, damn it! You DO have it in you!

I think Marisa Anne wrote this book especially for me. No, really........I do. She answers all the little doubts, fears and questions I have about whether I am worthy of living my dream of an artful life. And the answer is a resounding YES. Wonderful advice on how to make creativity a daily habit rather than seeing it as a luxury that I have to squeeze in if there's time. Soul stirring and encouraging; this book is a gift for creatives. After reading the kindle edition I've ordered a print version too. I want to hold this book with me as I set off on my artful life. I know it will be read and reread countless times along the journey.

Great for those who are hoping to start a creative practice, or return to one, but who are having doubts about fitting in the time to do so. Marisa Anne walks you through some common mental hurdles and encourages you to create a space for your creativity. The book is easy to read, touches on self care, and really champions the idea that we are all creative and capable of producing art. (And we all should!)

The illustrations are bright, colorful, and very cute. Chapter 3, Finding Inspiration, has some good tips and draws on Marisa Anne's experience as an assistant to an interior designer.

I originally came across this book in the "Crafts" section of a bookstore, but I would say it falls under both arts/arts & crafts and self-help. If you are looking to start pushing boundaries and step outside your comfort zone, this is a good place to start.

This book is just one of those that NEEDS to be read in physical form. It loses all flow and loveliness in eBook format and the artwork (which is part of what makes it so charming) looks awful in the eBook. I know that there are people complaining about the lack of depth, but it's just meant to inspire you to get creative, not to teach you the meaning of the universe. The upbeat, encouraging writing style does that for me!
