5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I'll Ever Read June 3, 2014
Format:Paperback
Luckily, one of my friends got me a pre-released copy signed by Jason and personalized by him. My friend knows that I have been following Jason for years (probably 3 or so at this point) and knows that I want to turn my crazy ideas into reality, so as an early birthday present, she got me a copy of Creativity For Sale.

Normally, I'm not much for reading this type of book, however, I have been giving heavy thought on turning my idea into a reality. After finishing this book, I can honestly say I feel prepared to start my new venture and finally make a decision in my crossroads of my life right now.

Jason goes step-by-step on how best to start a new business and also gives some mistakes that he has made over the years through his businesses. He doesn't downplay the importance of certain things and doesn't glorify anything. He calls it how he sees it. Which is truly refreshing.

After reading CFS, I feel truly inspired and want to do something with my life and even put down the book about halfway through just so I could clean out my garage (which, mind you, has been pestering me since about a month after we moved in which was over a year ago). It's not that Jason gives you motivational quotes and blah, blah, blah; he gives you the tools to get things done in a plain, witty language that speaks to the entrepreneur in most of us. And, yes, you read that correctly, most of us. I say most of us because as Jason warns, owning your own business is probably the most stressful and most rewarding job out there, but I want to add that it is not for the faint of heart.

So, in conclusion, if you want to start a business or launch a new product/service, THIS is the book for you.

I've known Jason for several years now, ever since I interviewed "this crazy t-shirt guy" when I was working at WIRED. We've kept in touch and I've watched his business evolve, reinvent itself, and raise the bar at every step. When the time came, how could I not buy a "t-shirt day" from him (he went WAY above and beyond) and help out with the publishing of this book (page 182!).

I really enjoyed the book.... here's why:
- It's unique. The book essentially featured a "sponsored tweet" at the bottom of every page. I didn't find this to be a distraction at all... it was like an easter egg on every page. I probably dog-earned 20 pages to go back later and check out some of the messages. And the fact that he was able to fund the entire book by doing this is pretty awesome.
- It's funny. Jason's style really comes through in the writing. It's like you're sitting having a conversation with him. A very easy and casual read.
- It's actionable. With so many sponsors and creative ideas, Jason has the chops to back up his advice.
- It's honest. While I felt I knew Jason fairly well through our few meetings and his online persona, he really 'peels back the onion' and talks about what it's really like to be an entrepreneur. This by far was the most valuable part of the book. While he's had amazing success, he's not afraid to go into great detail to talk about the highs and lows of running your own business... fears, payroll struggles, changing values, debt, relationships, fun, creativity, adventure, and more.

No matter what his last name is when you read this, pick up a copy of Jason's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing and Innovative Way to Publish June 2, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The dirty secret in the world of publishing is 99% of the books never make money and most only sell a few copies. Jason knew this reality and decided that his book would be profitable. So in normal iwearyourshirt fashion, he flipped the world of publishing and decided to make $75k before he wrote a word of the book. Not a bad day at the office.

With all of that said, you can tell Jason poured out his soul into this book. I could tell you how much I like the book (except for some parts that were elementary but I understood his logic) and on the whole, it was one of those page turners that you have trouble putting down. I finished the book within about a 10 hour span and it is normally hard to keep my that interested. They say put your money where you mouth is so I liked the book enough to just order 16 copies from Amazon for people at my business and business associates. I think that goes much farther than being verbose.

If you start running into sections (especially all of Chapter 12) that seem elementary, skip to the next section and it will speed your reading of the book and your enjoyment but don't skip the little ads at the bottom. Some are funny, some are creative, and many gave me some helpful resources. Nothing is plain about Jason and we can only guess what his next last name will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beersicles and Unitaurs! June 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Even how I received this book was creative. My friend attended a conference where Jason was speaking, he recommended I read it. Jason wrote: "Dave your friend Brett Henley wanted to surprise you with a copy of my new book! I hope you enjoy it and will let me know what you think!" You can bet I did.

I must say that the sponsored pages irked me for a moment as I started to read the book, I found them distracting. I suddenly realized how smart Jason was to use this method (among others) to finance producing Creativity For Sale. He was quickly forgiven and admired.

The book is loaded with smart, actionable tips, and plenty of humor to boot. I also love how Jason shared the sometimes painful business lessons he has learned along his journey. It's nice to read and know that we all make mistakes and become wiser from the lessons we learn.

I especially enjoyed the sections on setting goals and time management. Now time to get back to my beersicle.

It wasn't as inspiring as I hoped. My impression was that I was hearing the interesting tale of what the author did, rather than learning anything I might utilize for myself.
