Bought this for my 8 year old daughter, who's always up for a craft and interested in science. The kit was ok, it wasn't incredibly educational. When the child begins, they decorate the back 'scene' with stickers of fish and other undersea items. Then you construct the tree-like structures that the crystals grow on...they're made of cardboard, with slits cut in that you put cardboard piece 'a' in, and so forth. The construction was easy enough, in both written instructions and actual process, for her to do alone. Then you mix up the crystal powder solution in the (included) spray bottle, spray on the 'trees' and the crystals grow. The crystals grew quickly- overnight- and well. The crystals are NOT sturdy, however; they are too delicate for a child that may want to touch and explore them. They are those very, very fine and soft crystals, almost flower-y and are ruined if you touch them. So, when you set up the unit to grow, make sure you want to keep it there, because my DD carried her's around 2x (wanting to show people, being a kid, lol) and both times we lost some crystals due to damage. They dry out within a few days, and that's it.

Overall, it's a neat activity for a younger child, it's not educational unless you choose to research this specific crystal/growth process. It's a good, fast and easy 1x craft with a decent 'payback', as the crystals do grow within the day-but there is no exploration or after-activity, at all. When they have grown, they're done, and you aren't going to have a souvenir of the craft or anything. I'd recommend it (with parental assistance) for a younger crowd, perhaps 4-9, who will enjoy decorating the environment, and watching the growth process.

I, personally, would not buy it again...there just wasn't enough substance to it.
