Book Description

December 28, 2006 0126024006 978-0126024005 1
An integrative introduction to the theories and themes in research on creativity, this book is both a reference work and text for courses in this burgeoning area of research. The book begins with a discussion of the theories of creativity (Person, Product, Process, Place), the general question of whether creativity is influenced by nature or nurture, what research has indicated of the personality and style of creative individuals from a personality analysis standpoint, how social context affects creativity, and then coverage of issues like gender differences, whether creativity can be enhanced, if creativity is related to poor mental or physical health, etc.

The book contains boxes covering special interest items including one page biographies of famous creative individuals and activities for a group or individual to test and/or encourage creativity, as well as references to internet sites relating to creativity.

*Breaks down the major theories about creativity but doesn't restrict to a singular perspective
*Includes extensive citations of existing literature
*Textbook features included (i.e., key terms defined)

Review

"Mark A. Runco's excellent book Creativity: Theories and Themes: Research, Development, and Practice may be one way to bring creativity back into relevance in psychology. This remarkable book clearly sets the stage for those involved in creativity research, for those wanting to get into this interesting and complex area, or simply for those who want an up-to-date volume on the field from one of the leading researchers in the area."

More About the Author

Mark A. Runco is currently the E. Paul Torrance Professor of Creativity Studies at the University of Georgia, Athens.

Mark earned his PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the Claremont Graduate School. He earned tenure first at the University of Hawaii, Hilo, and then at California State University, Fullerton, and then, in 2008, at the University of Georgia, Athens. At that time he accepted the position of Torrance Professor at UGA. He was Director of the Torrance Creativity Center from 2008-2010. Dr. Runco has been Editor of the Creativity Research Journal since 1989 and is a Past President of Division 10 (Psychology, Art, Creativity, and Aesthetics) of the American Psychological Association. He co-edited two editions of the Encyclopedia of Creativity (1999, 2011). Probably for this reason he has, in the past two years, been quoted by the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek (cover story), US News and World Report, Oprah, Women's Health, and NPR. His textbook, Creativity: Theories, themes, and issues (Academic Press) has been translated into six languages. His new book, The New Science of Creativity, is due out in the Spring (Taylor & Francis). He is President of Creativity Testing Services, LLC (creativitytestingservices.com), which is the publisher of the extensive "rCAB" (Runco Creativity Assessment Battery). The "r" in rCAB is silent. Or perhaps it is trying to escape.

Amazon usually lists over 30 of Dr. Runco's editing books, text books, and similar publications.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poorly structured but informative, November 1, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Creativity: Theories and Themes: Research, Development, and Practice (Hardcover)
Not surprisingly, a heavy book from an experienced expert is quite informative and comprehensive. It certainly serves well as a reference for creativity researchers. What bothers me is the poor structure. Within many chapters, the structure and logical relationships among paragraphs are quite unclear and can be confusing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Creativity Review, September 10, 2009
This review is from: Creativity: Theories and Themes: Research, Development, and Practice (Hardcover)
The product was for a class I have enjoyed it so far however, I have not completed yet. It is very descriptive and easily read. It is helping me to understand creativity and the many theories that help define this term.
