I like the way that this looks when finished. Having said that, it was very, very hard to put together as the wood pieces were so poorly cut that in some cases the pieces which were supposed to fit together would not do so. I had to sand many pieces (about three dozen or so) down at the connection point in order to get them to fit together properly.

In short, it looks nice when finished, but is so poorly cut that it is not worth the hassle.

I bought this puzzle because it looked like a fun thing to work on occasionally over a number of days. It started out fine but once I started trying to assemble the puzzle, it quickly became obvious how poorly it was made. Pushing the pieces out resulted in chips in the top layer of wood, but I was hoping that they would not be noticeable. The biggest problem is that the pieces are not cut uniformly. When I tried to insert some tabs, they would not fit and the pieces broke pretty easily, trying to push extra parts out and put pieces in or others would fall out. It was too much hassle. As a puzzle it was pointless because I spent most of my time redoing the parts I had done previously instead of working towards completion. It was a total waste of my money and very frustrating. I love both flat and 3-D puzzles but this one was terrible.

We usually buy these kits at our local craft store at a really good price. They make a fun and quick project on a rainy day. The wood is unfinished and comes precut on a flat piece of board. Some kits have two sheets, others have 5 or 6 depending on the difficulty. It is not a perfect cut but for the most part, the pieces work well together. It comes with a little piece of sandpaper (fairly useless) but an adult with an Exacto knife can help if things are really off, which isn't often.

None of these kits come with detailed directions and take a little getting used to in assembly. The only thing that comes with it is a sheet that shows each wood sheet with the parts numbered to show which piece connects to another piece. Many of the pieces follow a pattern so it gets easier as you go along.

The Temple of Heaven is a very difficult assembly and took quite a bit of effort from my 11 year-old son. There is a section that requires getting all the fins of each level within a holding ring but as you push one part, the others come out. It took awhile and some frustration but eventually, he was successful and the final piece is impressive. I would suggest this for 10 year-olds and up if they are good at building kits.

If you have no interest in rebuilding, I would suggest gluing parts of this with Elmer's or it will continue to fall apart when moved.
You can also paint it or stain it when finished.
