Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9-Each title profiles approximately 150 women who have made significant contributions to their fields from ancient times to the present. The Literary Crowd features writers, poets, journalists, playwrights, philosophers, and critics, and includes diarist Anne Frank. Creators highlights an international array of artists, but also includes collectors such as Peggy Guggenheim and Isabella Stewart Gardner. The entries, listed alphabetically, are laid out in columns. Although brief, they are packed with clear, concisely written information concerning each person's life, factors that influenced her work, and impact on others. Politics of the time is a prevailing theme, especially in The Literary Crowd. One or two average-quality, black-and-white pictures are found on each double-page spread. In Creators, some are portraits of the artists and others are reproductions of their work. However, the lack of color diminishes the visual appeal in that volume. Many biographies and collective biographies have been written about women who will be more familiar to young people and/or are more comprehensive, and thus better suited to gathering data for reports. The esoteric nature of many of the entries and the brevity of the sketches limit the usefulness of these books.
