Book Description

For fans of DEAN KOONTZ, JAMES PATTERSON and THOMAS HARRIS, a tale of snowbound terror and suspense:

They call it the Heartland Child Murders.
Everyone else calls it a nightmare.
Locked doors don’t stop him.
He leaves no trace behind.
He only takes little girls.
His nickname…

The Iceman.

A deranged serial killer roams wintry rural Nebraska targeting little girls with a demented purpose that no one can fathom.

Special Agent EMMA KANE, a former DC cop and damaged goods now with the FBI, is assigned to baby-sit burned out profiler JACOB THORNE, once the best in the business but now said to have lost his edge, as they both fly to Nebraska to catch this maniac.

Thorne is erratic, abrasive and unpredictably brilliant, but what he and Kane find in the heartland is much more than anyone bargained for, especially when the Iceman challenges them personally, where it hurts most.

The clock is ticking and a little girl’s life is on the line.

And maybe even more with that, once they find out what he’s really up to.

Editorial Reviews

"You're used to clever plots, complex characters, twisted cases and brilliant writing. Few things can surprise you, because most times you figure out who the murderer is before the book ends. Well, let me tell you something: 'Creatures of Appetite' by Todd Travis is like nothing you've read before. Prepare yourself to be hooked from the very first pages, to forget that you need to eat or sleep, and to be taken by surprise by a twisted ending that you could have never guessed." -- Jo Ammons, NY Books Examiner

"If you start reading this book thinking that you'll be able to put it down before bedtime, you're wrong. You'll only be able to fall asleep after you turn the last page. Usually, readers who read a lot of crime novels gain the ability to guess how everything is going to end, or at least suspect. It's not going to happen with "Creatures of Appetite", because the ending will come as a shock." -- Top Books Worth Reading

"No, as a reader you won't guess who the murderer is before Jacob Thorne puts two and two together, but that's not what makes Creatures of Appetite stand out in its genre. What makes it really worth reading is on the very last pages." --All Fantasy Worlds

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but... March 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is actually really really good. There are many interesting twists and turns and nothing is ever quite as it seems. That being said, I have only two complaints. One: the excessive profanity. I'm not a prude, but it was really kind of ridiculous. I know that in most genres there is cursing and I'm okay with that but I lost count of how many times the f word was thrown in so when Thorne lost his temper, the words--even in all caps--didn't hold the same punch. If that bothers you...this isn't one for your reading list. Two: the typos. We're talking whole sentences that were out of order. It makes for a distracting read and often interferes with the suspense during high tension moments. If that was cleaned up I would have rated it higher because it's a smart thriller that is hard to put down...unless, of course, you get irritated with the typos and almost comical "crude cop" talk and need a break. But seriously, being his first novel I was super impressed and can't wait to see what happens with Thorne and Kane.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book ive read in years! June 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am an avid horror/suspense reader and for the past few years, have been rather disappointed with many of the books I've read, until this one. This book had me hooked from the first paragraph and I was unable to put it down! The story is fantastic, the characters are very relatable, and the twists actually shocked me! Mr. Travis is fairly new to the scene, but he is quickly becoming a genre favorite, and I am looking forward to anything new that he writes. I would like to thank Mr. Travis for sharing his wonderful gift with us!

4.0 out of 5 stars Icy serial killer thriller March 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Creatures of Appetite is a thriller centred around the hunt for the Iceman, a killer of children. It clips along at a good pace and the story unfolds nicely. It goes a little crazy at the end, but it worked well.

I have a minor issue with the writing. There is some tense confusion, although looking at the pattern I think it might be a style thing. Either way it didn't work for me and stood out in what was otherwise a well written book. However you shouldn't let that put you off as it is a enjoyable story, especially if you enjoy tales of serial killers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised July 14, 2013
By Heather
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I got this book after reading the reviews, so I'd seen several people complain about the typos. Fortunately, I got it after the author had released a revised edition, which seems to have fixed all of those issues. Also, the swearing doesn't seem that excessive to me. They are cops, there is swearing, but I think it fit the attitudes and the environment.

For the actual story-it was definitely a good read. The chapters are very short which helps the story move along quickly. The first three chapters seem kind of disconnected (as they jump from one event to the next), but as soon as they got tied together, I was hooked. The author did a very good job with providing several twists along the way, kind of hinting at the ending, but with just enough details left out that you're still surprised when it actually happens.

Also, if you're a fan of being very surprised at the end of a crime book, you should definitely read this book. It's ending is brilliant and I there's no way that I could have seen it coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Read! Do NOT miss this one! July 14, 2013
By Kymmie

If I could give this book 10 stars out of 5 I would. I instantly grabbed me and kept me hooked. I was so engrossed I didn't hear the radio in the car or my fiancé talking to me. There were some spelling/grammar errors but the story and characters were so interesting I can honestly say that, in this book's case, I was 99.99% able to overlook them. I got done with the book & said to my fiancé' "Holy sh*t I did NOT see that coming! That was an effing awesome book!". I read a LOT and I'm pretty easy to entertain but this author? OMG! I cannot recommend this book enough! I picked up this book for free through and I can tell you I am SO impressed with this author I would feel completely satisfied to have paid full price for this one. This guy has a HUGE career ahead of him and I can't wait to read more of his stuff. It's creepy and gross and mysterious with great characters and this would make a SPECTACULAR movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Might need to move over Mr Patterson March 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have only one word for this book "WOW!" I was browsing, looking for a book while waiting for my favorite authors new releases and came across this one. Got the sample chapter, read it and immediately bought it. That was this morning and I literally couldn't put it down, finished it in about 5 hours and, again, WOW!

The characters were totally believable, the killers twisted and the story line is awesome. I would have paid $15 (like other Kindle books out there) and it would have been worth every penny.

Don't want to give too much away so I'll just say, READ THIS BOOK and be prepared to say WOW....

4.0 out of 5 stars Dude, what were you thinking? January 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a great book. We are talking some serious potential here, why, why, why so much profanity?
I am anything but a prude; but there was so much cussing in here that it made it hard to read. I actually stopped at one point and then picked it back up at a later date. You have a fan here, cut back on the profanity and you'll more fans.
Believe me, I write romance with sex scenes so this is not coming from an uptight fan, it is coming from someone that is looking forward to your next book.
