Clan of Xymox made two albums for 4AD Records in the mid '80s, the label's heyday--and, it turns out, the band's as well. Clan of Xymox (1985) and Medusa (1986) were perfect slices of moody, lovelorn gothic pop--reminiscent of New Order, only more morose. But the band fragmented shortly after, shedding members, reducing its name to simply Xymox, and releasing halfhearted plays to the dance floor that failed to make an impression. Creatures is an attempt to recapture some of the Dutch band's past glory. It's not a comeback album (that was 1998's Hidden Faces) but rather a we're-serious-about-coming-back album. Sole original member Ronny Moorings leads a fairly tight ensemble through 11 tracks that echo in style the muscular gothic rock of Sisters of Mercy and the emotive balladry of Diary of Dreams. Standouts include the catchy, retro-gothic dance tune "Jasmine and Rose," the industrial-tinged "Crucified," and the dirgelike "Creature." It's definitely not the Clan of Xymox of old, but fans of straight-ahead gothic rock will find a lot to like here. --Steve Landau

Biography

Since their formation in their native Holland their music has been constantly changing, always challenging and often quite breathtaking. Some of us have always been of the opinion that XYMOX are something special. A band fired by electronic music but determined, always, to make something that is very much their own. They are unique.

First there was Clan of Xymox, formed in Amsterdam but ... Read more in Amazon's Clan of Xymox Store

I am a relatively new fan to Clan of Xymox.
Erica Anderson
It has a good mix of moods, & although it's definitely dark all the way through, there's some dancy, slow, dreamy, & rockier tracks.
Pessimystica
This album has become a drug for me, as the more I listen, the more I need to hear.

CREATURES reveals a gloomy deep-voiced side of Ronny Moorings that even long time fans will have a hard time recognizing. The track 'Jasmine and Rose' fits perfectly on the Sisters of Mercy's "First and Last and Always", 'Taste of Medicine' borrows elements from Peter Murphy's songs, while The Cure meet The Xymox on the track 'Waterfront'... and every other track on this album plunges us deeper into the darkest sounds of Gothism. The Clan have put together a masterpiece, raising the bar of challenge.
* Favorite tracks: 'Consolation' and 'All I Have'.

"Creatures" combines all of Clan of Xymox' best characteristics onto one CD. The melodies are beautiful, yet at the same time haunting. . .seemingly calling you from across the room for another listen! This album has become a drug for me, as the more I listen, the more I need to hear. I have listened to it everyday since its release, and I have no plans to stop! "Crucified" is my favorite cut off of this one, and could quite possibly be the best song ever recorded. This CD is a gothic masterpiece!

Well, this has to be one of my favorite album by clan of xymox. Its brilliant and its style is very typical of clan of xymox. The first song is a great start to the album, the melodic and racey parts of Jasmine and Rose setting the scene for the rest of the album and its eletronic and darkwave elements to come. Lyricly I personly believe this to be the best album yet. The second song, Crucified, was actually the first ever clan of xymox song i ever heard, and still remains my favourite. Its bass is brilliant and the eletronic sounds are great on this track. The vocals are also very clear and the whole melody for the song is very original. Many of the songs on creatures strike you as different, and each has its own hightlights. The next song which hit me was the actual single they brought out prior to this album, Consolation. Its beautiful piano work and slow and mellow melody is great for that slow feel. Another track which i really liked was Creature, its beautiful lyrics and mellow tune is great to relax to. The imagry the lyrics for this track also create a great atmosphere for this album, the classic gothic tune.Falling down, track 9 is also a great track, i really thought the guitar work was very well done and the almost mythical sounds in the background are great. All in all i think its a great album, and next to Notes from the underground (another great clan of xymox album) this has to be a must buy for a dedicated fan or a fan of great gothic tunes and mellow melodys.

Their darkest record ever, from beginning to end a treat. A great record with super club hits like Jasmine and Rose or Doubts. The dreamy Creatures or Consolation. Perfect , just perfect, surely on top of my list.

this is a great piece by a great band, YES a lot different from their early new-wave kinda thing back in the 80's, which is also GREAT, medusa is an epic for me, well creatures isnt really an epic but its good neverthless, all the songs in here are great, expect for waterfront which I always skip, and well, what is that
thing of saying that every band that has repetitive beats and deep growling vocals is a Sister of Mercy clone? come on? ok, they use some elements that Sisters of Mercy used, but they are in no way a clone of Sisters of Mercy. this band has its own personality , their frontman is a VERY talented man and its an absurd to say they went Sisters of Mercy clone. sorry but its just an absurd. copycats are out there, sure, but Clan of Xymox isnt amongst them.

Maybe since I just got into this band recently, I don't find much fault here, but all I've had was the 'Twist of Shadows' album, which I still love. I "discovered" the darker Clan of Xymox thanks to some random Napster downloads because I was trying to find some good new (& old) underplayed unknown stuff. Just the title alone to "Jasmine & Rose" appealed to me, as I thought to myself, "oh, I'll get this, this looks nice & catchy..." And boy, was I right..."Jasmine & Rose" (J&R) has been my 'obsession' song for the past 2 months, as in, I can't go 1 day without hearing it once (eek, almost as bad as it playing on the radio)!! After hunting cd stores for about a month, I finally found 1 copy of this 1 in a 'goth/industrial' section, so if yer looking for this & want it right away, you better order it online, cuz it's not very abundant. One thing that surprised me was when I found out that J&R came from this album that just came out last year, cuz I was convinced it was from 1 of their 80's albums. Then I look them up on the web, & found some recent concert photos from last year...& I missed out!! Maybe next time, hopefully.... Anyway, the rest of the album isn't as 80's sounding as J&R, but still 80s nostalgic. Some albums you can pinpoint them out & say what year they were from, but this one stands on its own. Course, as much as I've been listening to it lately, I'll always remember this time. And, I think 1 of the reviewers is wrong about no other songs other than J&R standing out, just depends on yer taste & mood. It has a good mix of moods, & although it's definitely dark all the way through, there's some dancy, slow, dreamy, & rockier tracks.Read more ›
