5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is a gothic masterpiece!
"Creatures" combines all of Clan of Xymox' best characteristics onto one CD. The melodies are beautiful, yet at the same time haunting. . .seemingly calling you from across the room for another listen! This album has become a drug for me, as the more I listen, the more I need to hear. I have listened to it everyday since its release, and I have no plans to...

2.0 out of 5 stars why goth sucks
Once upon a time, Clan of Xymox used to be a unique and interesting dark electro-pop band; now they're satisfied with sounding like every other two-bit goth band out there [if you'd have told me that most of these songs were by Love Like Blood, I'd have believed it]. The lead singer has such a wonderful voice. It's a shame he feels he needs to hide it behind the...

"Crucified" is my favorite cut off of this one, and could quite possibly be the best song ever recorded. This CD is a gothic masterpiece!

4.0 out of 5 stars Just like the good old days!, July 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Creatures (Audio CD)
CREATURES reveals a gloomy deep-voiced side of Ronny Moorings that even long time fans will have a hard time recognizing. The track 'Jasmine and Rose' fits perfectly on the Sisters of Mercy's "First and Last and Always", 'Taste of Medicine' borrows elements from Peter Murphy's songs, while The Cure meet The Xymox on the track 'Waterfront'... and every other track on this album plunges us deeper into the darkest sounds of Gothism. The Clan have put together a masterpiece, raising the bar of challenge.
* Favorite tracks: 'Consolation' and 'All I Have'.

Their darkest record ever, from beginning to end a treat. A great record with super club hits like Jasmine and Rose or Doubts. The dreamy Creatures or Consolation. Perfect , just perfect, surely on top of my list.

5.0 out of 5 stars my favorite, January 29, 2006
This review is from: Creatures (Audio CD)
Well, this has to be one of my favorite album by clan of xymox. Its brilliant and its style is very typical of clan of xymox. The first song is a great start to the album, the melodic and racey parts of Jasmine and Rose setting the scene for the rest of the album and its eletronic and darkwave elements to come. Lyricly I personly believe this to be the best album yet. The second song, Crucified, was actually the first ever clan of xymox song i ever heard, and still remains my favourite. Its bass is brilliant and the eletronic sounds are great on this track. The vocals are also very clear and the whole melody for the song is very original. Many of the songs on creatures strike you as different, and each has its own hightlights. The next song which hit me was the actual single they brought out prior to this album, Consolation. Its beautiful piano work and slow and mellow melody is great for that slow feel. Another track which i really liked was Creature, its beautiful lyrics and mellow tune is great to relax to. The imagry the lyrics for this track also create a great atmosphere for this album, the classic gothic tune.Falling down, track 9 is also a great track, i really thought the guitar work was very well done and the almost mythical sounds in the background are great. All in all i think its a great album, and next to Notes from the underground (another great clan of xymox album) this has to be a must buy for a dedicated fan or a fan of great gothic tunes and mellow melodys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Come on lets give the guys a break, August 22, 2002

this is a great piece by a great band, YES a lot different from their early new-wave kinda thing back in the 80's, which is also GREAT, medusa is an epic for me, well creatures isnt really an epic but its good neverthless, all the songs in here are great, expect for waterfront which I always skip, and well, what is that
thing of saying that every band that has repetitive beats and deep growling vocals is a Sister of Mercy clone? come on? ok, they use some elements that Sisters of Mercy used, but they are in no way a clone of Sisters of Mercy. this band has its own personality , their frontman is a VERY talented man and its an absurd to say they went Sisters of Mercy clone. sorry but its just an absurd. copycats are out there, sure, but Clan of Xymox isnt amongst them.

5.0 out of 5 stars melancholy at its best, October 18, 2004
This review is from: Creatures (Audio CD)
"We predicted with the second album of Clan Of Xymox, post Xymox, the return to somber atmospheres, but we certainly did not expect such a big surprise. At a time when the Sisters of Mercy make us wait eternally and have long denied their gothic origins, Clan Of Xymox comes to the rescue pouring out a new flood of melancholy and cold melodies. Ronny Moorings' voice reaches notes so low that we barely recognize him, and when he intones " I've lost faith in humankind " it is not hard to be conforted in
the idea that " Creatures " is manifest, and according to the words of its author, the darkest album of the band. But even if some of its elements revive in our memories emanations from " First & last & always " or " Pornography " (on " Waterfront "), they do not erase the grip of Clan Of
Xymox, which wisely directs the production's totality. There is nothing nostalgic either in these evocations of the past which actualize themselves marvelously in the group's sound. The proof is that after rising from their ashes, Ronny and his clan are far from having finished surprising us."

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow....I'm still hooked!!, September 18, 2000
By
This review is from: Creatures (Audio CD)
Maybe since I just got into this band recently, I don't find much fault here, but all I've had was the 'Twist of Shadows' album, which I still love. I "discovered" the darker Clan of Xymox thanks to some random Napster downloads because I was trying to find some good new (& old) underplayed unknown stuff. Just the title alone to "Jasmine & Rose" appealed to me, as I thought to myself, "oh, I'll get this, this looks nice & catchy..." And boy, was I right..."Jasmine & Rose" (J&R) has been my 'obsession' song for the past 2 months, as in, I can't go 1 day without hearing it once (eek, almost as bad as it playing on the radio)!! After hunting cd stores for about a month, I finally found 1 copy of this 1 in a 'goth/industrial' section, so if yer looking for this & want it right away, you better order it online, cuz it's not very abundant. One thing that surprised me was when I found out that J&R came from this album that just came out last year, cuz I was convinced it was from 1 of their 80's albums. Then I look them up on the web, & found some recent concert photos from last year...& I missed out!! Maybe next time, hopefully.... Anyway, the rest of the album isn't as 80's sounding as J&R, but still 80s nostalgic. Some albums you can pinpoint them out & say what year they were from, but this one stands on its own. Course, as much as I've been listening to it lately, I'll always remember this time. And, I think 1 of the reviewers is wrong about no other songs other than J&R standing out, just depends on yer taste & mood. It has a good mix of moods, & although it's definitely dark all the way through, there's some dancy, slow, dreamy, & rockier tracks. My 2nd obsession song from here recently has been "Taste of Medicine"...all almost-8 minutes of it. And come to think of it, that song has a verrrry similar 80s nostalgic guitar riff to one heard on A Flock of Seagulls song "Space Age Lovesong". If a song is reallllly good, the longer the better :) "Crucified" & "Consolation" are really good too. "Waterfront" is about the darkest song on here, which has a slightly different mood than the rest of the album. And so what if there's a Sisters of Mercy resemblance...if you really like this dark/gothic/dancy style of rock, then you won't mind at all!! We neeeed more bands like this!! I bought this with a couple of other cds, & I'm still listening to it like I just bought it yesterday. So, to answer yer question whether or not you should get this, the answer is...YES!!

It's now 2006 and I still can't get enough of this album . I rank this album one of the highest in my collection. I thank clan of xymox for making each album with so much special care and emotions, which you cannot say about too many artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars All I have, May 4, 2003
By
This review is from: Creatures (Audio CD)
I am a relatively new fan to Clan of Xymox. The only other cds I have is their live cd and their more recent album "Notes From the Underground". I came across "Creatures" over the weekend in the used cd bins at my favorite record store. I immediately bought it when I saw that one of my favorite Clan songs was on it, "Jasmine and Rose". I have my friend who got me into The Sisters of Mercy and VNV Nation to thank for getting me into Clan of Xymox. I loved "Creatures" from the very moment I put the cd into my stereo. Unlike a lot of reviewers here, I can't compare "Creatures" with Clan's earlier albums. I will admit that the music on this cd reminds me a little of The Sisters of Mercy but overall, I think Clan has their own sound. If anything, I think "Creatures" sounds more like The Cure's "Pornography" album than The Sisters of Mercy. Favorite songs? I had a hard time picking out favorite songs since I enjoyed them so much. The songs that really stood out for me is "Jasmine and Rose", "Crucified", and "Consolation". Solid album. Not a single song I did not dislike.
