5.0 out of 5 stars An informative, fun, but sometimes scary pop-up/action book.
If your kids like pop-up/action books, this one is full of things to play with and see. There are lots of flaps to look under, things to move, and creatures popping out of the pages. However, some of the content includes animals hunting other animals, and some of the animals in this book can be scary. (A big tarantula, bats, coyotes, a scorpion, a rattle snake, etc.)...

The boook is great. It is hard to tell which age group it is for. Our grandson is 6 and it may be a bit young for him.

However, some of the content includes animals hunting other animals, and some of the animals in this book can be scary. (A big tarantula, bats, coyotes, a scorpion, a rattle snake, etc.) I was a little nervous when I first looked through the book, but my son (2 1/2) loves it and was not afraid of it. He reads it over and over, and shows me what is behind every rock, bush, and cactus. I would recommend it with the caution that it could be scary for some kids.

We've had this since my son was born. He and his little sister have really enjoyed it. They love to have the animals move, search for the hiding animals, and have us read the text. A great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding and sturdy, December 1, 2007
This review is from: Creatures of the Desert World (Hardcover)
When I owned a bookstore, we could not keep this wonderful book on our shelves. We put out a demo and wrapped the rest of the copies to prevent damage. Even then, the demo lasted for quite some time despite enthusiastic use by our young customers. There are a surprising number of very creative moving creatures on each page in addition to the pop-ups. The illustrations are colorful and outstanding. This one is a winner!

This and all the National Geographic pop up books are incredible for kids and adults (I have seen many from many artists but haven't been anything as good overall). I true, ageless art (I plan on keeping them for my kids' kids:). The way my 1.5 toddler kicked her legs, talked and opened her eyed the first time she saw one of these is all I need. Pop up book, Daddy - were some of my kids' first words. And they always want to do the pulleys of course :) Reason I got them was b/s I remember being fascinated by them as a kid. BTW: The National Museum of American History has a pop up book exhibit running in 2011.

Highly recommended! I have purchased at least 30 copies of this book over the years. My son, now in graduate school, loved it as a child, as did all my neices. The paper engineering, the art work, the brief but accurate information, make this book a wonderful introduction to desert animals. Most of my exchange students have carried copies home. I continue to buy copies of this book when I travel to distant lands. I give one to hosts, guides or teachers as a small way to share my beloved Arizona desert with those who will never be able to visit. I have a vivid memory of Tuaregs in Timbuktu crowded around the book and pulling the tabs. They loved the paper craft and very much enjoyed making comparisions between the animals and plants shown in the book, and their own arrid surroundings. This book can make the world a smaller, friendlier place!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pop-up desert book, December 6, 2010

Besides the many popups in this book, there are plenty of tabs to pull to find different animals. The illustrations are great and the story/descriptions of the desert are nice too. It is a good length book and very interesting. Great story about Sonoran desert life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little concerned, March 18, 2009

thought it might be too much pop up and wouldn't hold up. I kind of
expected more pictues like the cover detailing the animals.

But my grandson loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, November 19, 2008

We actually live in the Sonoran Desert in SE Arizona and have all the animals listed in the book around us. I bought this for my son before he was even born and he has been enjoying it since he was approx. 1 year old. He is now 5 and still loves it and enjoys making the tarantula get the beetle and the owl feed her baby. (all the pages have 'move the animals' features.) A great book for anybody living anywhere in the world to learn about the Arizona Sonoran Desert!
