This review is from: Dive! A Book Of Deep Sea Creatures (level 3) (Hello Reader, Science) (Paperback)
And few creatures live there. But there are some. And that's what this book is all about. It's magnificent!

Children will be fascinated by the most amazing photos and the clear as a crystal bell text. They are going to take a trip in a submarine down to the bottom of the sea where it is very, very cold, and they will meet the world of deep-sea creatures.

There are fish with flashing lights caused by body chemicals that attract prey. One is even called the Flashlight Fish. Fish with eight arms, such as the octopus. An amazing fact is that if an octopus loses an arm, not to worry. It grows a new one!

And then there are squid - well, they have ten arms, all around their heads. And the description of the giant squid with a body that can "grow longer than a big bus" (what a great description for the imagination of a child). This creature has the largest eyes of any animal on earth.

And get ready for the sperm whale (unfortunately for the giant squid the sperm whale likes to eat it). But you're not going to believe this - even after the giant squid is swallowed by the sperm whale, the squid keeps on fighting for its life, scratching and even cutting the whale's stomach in its fight, leaving scars.

The photographs do justice to the text, and vice versa. The author, Melvin Berger, is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, so as well as being an artist, he knows his science. I have read several other books by Mr. Berger, one on crickets and another on spiders. Both are excellent.

This book is a winner. I'm even going to read it again. Right away, in fact.
