Book Description

For four thousand years, creatus have concealed themselves from the humans who hunted them almost to extinction. Unwittingly, one creatus will endanger them all...

As with most of his family, Derrick Ashton knows his future and what position he's destined to fill within his unique society. Everything changes, however, when he breaks one of his family's strictest laws and falls in love--with a human.

In his quest to protect the woman he can never have, a twist of faith propels him into a new role that will cause dissension among his family and endanger the anonymity that they've strived for thousands of years to protect.

Now, he will risk everything to save the girl from humans and his own kind. The one thing he can't save her from, however...is herself.

The Creatus Series is not your normal paranormal story...it's a realistic romantic mystery based on the myths you've heard your entire life. Prepare to believe.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This prequel starts fourteen years before the events in Creatus Book One. I highly recommend you read this prequel first so you can get a look into the characters' lives leading up to the full story. Prepare yourself for a cliffhanger ending, though.

Rating note: Although this story would probably receive a PG-13 rating, the content is appropriate for ages sixteen and older due to alcohol and drug use. Neither, however, is ever glorified. There are also some scenes of driving under the influence. Please know that I do not condone these actions; they are only used to display the character's state at the time.

About the Author

Although all of Carmen's stories have a common thread--romance, mystery, and suspense--not all of her novels are supernatural. Her first five books are romantic-suspense whodunits. They are all stand-alone novels; however, she does link each of her stories with a little surprise. She also has a series of mysteries with a ghostly edge. Please look for all of her books on her Amazon author page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good series! July 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was reading Creatus when my Kindle notified me of this prequel. I had already read the first 20% so reading this went over the same time period but with a different perspective. I am so glad I did. It was an interesting experience. The note from the author at the end cracked me up. So, back to book one - feeling excited!

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect beginning to a wonderful series April 28, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I finished book 1, CREATUS, and had just started book 2, when CREATUS (THEY EXIST) came out. So I paused my reading and grabbed this one instead.

So glad I did!

Book 1 starts pretty late in the game, leaving many questions as to how the characters got to the point they are when we meet them. Creatus (They Exist)covers these holes. Unlike most stories, this one was probably pretty tricky to write, simply because anyone who has read book 1 already knows the outcome. With that in mind, Carmen still creates a story with all the tension and unexpected twists and turns needed to keep a reader's attention.

New aspects are brought into the characters' backgrounds, which really deepens the understanding of their later actions as well as adds a new insight into their personalities. I felt as if I were getting to know the characters all over again.

The pacing is great, always introducing new aspects that I didn't see coming. I read this in two sittings and had trouble putting it down after the 1st one (but we all need our sleep). I still found myself fevering for the main character's safety although I knew she'd be okay, since I'd read book 1.

Summed up, Carmen DeSousa did a great job in filling in the information that I really felt was missing in book 1 and accomplished it while still adding new bits, twists and turns. I really recommend this to anyone who has already read the other books in this series as well as to anyone who is just starting with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT BOOK BY CARMEN! April 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This series by Mrs. DeSousa is truly a must read. A different twist to fairy tales, super heroes & villains. I can't emphasize enough how compelling & captivating her world of Creatus is & how she brings it to life for the reader. She is unlike any author & not only listens to her readers but will answer any comments/emails that is sent to her. Do yourself a favor & "FALL" into her Creatus World! When you read it, you will understand the "FALL", so open the pages, immerse yourself & be transported to "Creatus!"

I chose this rating because this book, this whole SERIES is absolutely fantastic. Carmen DeSousa has such a knack for dressing you into the heart and soul of the book. This is only a precursor to the greater things to come. She had said on one of her pages that this short bit was actually the first 3 chapters that her publishers told her to remove from Creatus: They Exist.
It is NOT a requirement to read this book but it is totally worth it. I fully recommend the entire series to anyone from teens on up.
No graphic "Brown chicken brown cow" scenes and language is fairly mild. Though there is violence, but nothing too horrendous that has to be skipped.

4.0 out of 5 stars I can't wait to start this series! May 21, 2014
By LMiner
Format:Kindle Edition
When I first started reading this, I assumed it would be like other paranormal stories I have read - paranormal and human fall in love, they get through the challenges and have a happily ever after. Don't get me wrong. I love these stories. My bookshelves and Kindle are full of them. This book, however, is anything but predictable. When I got to a certain point in this book, I was shocked at what happened and knew I was going to like this author. This series may end with an HEA, but after reading this prequel, you won't assume anything until you get to the last page. I'm excited to start book 1 in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm very intrigued June 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I won an ecopy of this book in a giveaway, and I already had the first two books in this series (Creatus and Creatus Rogue) on my Kindle. The prequel was published after the publication of these two books, and I’m glad I started with it.

I really enjoyed Creatus (They Exist). It gives the readers the opportunity to get to know the characters better. There is a twist in this story I never saw coming (no spoilers here), and as soon as it took place I couldn’t put the book down. The ending is highly intriguing, and now I really look forward to reading Creatus (Book 1).

I read this after reading the first two, but I'd highly recommend reading it first. It explains a lot about the set up for the first book and gives you a good understanding of the characters' histories.

More About the Author

A romantic-suspense writer, my stories overflow with romance, mystery, suspense, a hint of paranormal sometimes, and of course, tragedy. After all, what would a great story be without a tragic event setting the stage? All of my novels are sensual, but not erotic, gripping but not graphic and will make you cry, laugh, love, and hope. Although some of my titles clearly include supernatural or ghostly beings, my writing dances on the edge of the paranormal, in a genre referred to as magical realism. My hope is that as you read my stories, you'll wonder, "Hmmm...what if?"

As most authors, I blame my leap into a full-time career as a professional writer on my love of reading. Reading has always been an escape for me. When life was rough as a child, I could always disappear into a book. But I found something else too... I discovered that writing out my thoughts was healing. Not only could I create hope for my protagonists, but I could do away with the antagonists--legally.

When I penned my first novel, 'She Belongs to Me', I allowed only my cousin and best friend to read it. They are the reason I write. They pushed me to publish, as they felt my stories would give others who've experienced tragedies hope. So now, even though I still write for me, I mainly write for my readers who continually encourage me that my words touched their soul.

Most of my novels share some of my favorite hobbies, mostly, anything to do with the great outdoors. I rarely spend my days off at a movie theatre or the mall. In fact, I hate shopping, and my hubby would prefer to do anything other than take me to a movie that I'd already read the book. :) Also, we both would rather read a book on the beach--or a coffee shop if it's raining--and if the weather is really nice, we love to go kayaking and hiking.
