Book Description

In every myth, there’s a modicum of truth.

For four thousand years, creatus have concealed themselves from the humans who hunted them almost to extinction. Unwittingly, one creatus will endanger them all...

As with most of his family, Derrick Ashton knows his future and what position he's destined to fill within his unique society. Everything changes, however, when he breaks one of his family's strictest laws and falls in love--with a human.

In his quest to protect the woman he can never have, a twist of faith propels him into a new role that will cause dissension among his family and endanger the anonymity that they've strived for thousands of years to protect.

Now, he will risk everything to save the girl from humans and his own kind. The one thing he can't save her from, herself.

The Creatus Series is not your normal paranormal's a realistic romantic mystery based on the myths you've heard your entire life. Prepare to believe.

Note: The events in Creatus (They Exist) start fourteen years prior to the events in Creatus. I highly recommend you read this novella before Creatus so you can get a look into the characters' lives leading up to the full story. Only the last chapter and first chapter overlap, and they are from a different point of view. Prepare yourself for a cliffhanger ending, though.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This prequel starts fourteen years before the events in Creatus Book One. I highly recommend you read this prequel first so you can get a look into the characters' lives leading up to the full story. Prepare yourself for a cliffhanger ending, though.

Rating note: Although this story would probably receive a PG-13 rating, the content is appropriate for ages sixteen and older due to alcohol and drug use. Neither, however, is ever glorified. There are also some scenes of driving under the influence. Please know that I do not condone these actions; they are only used to display the character's state at the time.

About the Author

Although all of Carmen's stories have a common thread--romance, mystery, and suspense--not all of her novels are supernatural. Her first five books are romantic-suspense whodunits. They are all stand-alone novels; however, she does link each of her stories with a little surprise. She also has a series of mysteries with a ghostly edge. Please look for all of her books on her Amazon author page.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect beginning to a wonderful series April 28, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I finished book 1, CREATUS, and had just started book 2, when CREATUS (THEY EXIST) came out. So I paused my reading and grabbed this one instead.

So glad I did!

Book 1 starts pretty late in the game, leaving many questions as to how the characters got to the point they are when we meet them. Creatus (They Exist)covers these holes. Unlike most stories, this one was probably pretty tricky to write, simply because anyone who has read book 1 already knows the outcome. With that in mind, Carmen still creates a story with all the tension and unexpected twists and turns needed to keep a reader's attention.

New aspects are brought into the characters' backgrounds, which really deepens the understanding of their later actions as well as adds a new insight into their personalities. I felt as if I were getting to know the characters all over again.

The pacing is great, always introducing new aspects that I didn't see coming. I read this in two sittings and had trouble putting it down after the 1st one (but we all need our sleep). I still found myself fevering for the main character's safety although I knew she'd be okay, since I'd read book 1.

Summed up, Carmen DeSousa did a great job in filling in the information that I really felt was missing in book 1 and accomplished it while still adding new bits, twists and turns. I really recommend this to anyone who has already read the other books in this series as well as to anyone who is just starting with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good series! July 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was reading Creatus when my Kindle notified me of this prequel. I had already read the first 20% so reading this went over the same time period but with a different perspective. I am so glad I did. It was an interesting experience. The note from the author at the end cracked me up. So, back to book one - feeling excited!

This prequel only gives a little bit more information than is given in the first book. Not really necessary to purchase

5.0 out of 5 stars A great start to the series! June 29, 2014

I read this after reading the first two, but I'd highly recommend reading it first. It explains a lot about the set up for the first book and gives you a good understanding of the characters' histories.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Beginning October 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Beginning: Creatus ( they exists) The Prequel By Carmen Desousa

I've read every book in this series, it's one of my favorite series. I like that Carmen wrote a prequel it gives me more insight about the characters beginnings. If you haven't read any of this series, this is a great one to start with. Strong characters that are consistent through the whole series. The author writes flawlessly from one book to the next. I believe there could be Creatus out there, you'll see what I mean when you read this series. The characters are so real, the settings are clear in your mind, you feel like you get a feel for Boston. I highly recommend this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent December 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I thoroughly enjoyed this well written and intriguing prequel to the Creatus series - so much that I bought the box set...I need to know what happens next.

This tale was cleverly done, with just the right amount of mystery to keep me reading. I loved the concept and look forward to the interesting mix of fantasy, science fiction and 'reality'.

I have kept this vague because I don't give spoilers.

Overall, a great read with an interesting 'something different'.

Recommended if you are prepared to want more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It! April 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I love that Carmen DeSousa has written a prequel to this series that I've quickly grown to love. The insight here adds clarity to the relationships of the characters in the first book. But it's definitely not all background and fill-in material. This story has tension and build-up that makes you want to keep turning pages.

If you have already read the first two books in the Creatus Series, this is a fun addition taking us back to how it all began. If you haven't read the series yet, this is the perfect place to start.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good story and worth reading. March 1, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An interesting story of an ill-fated romance and a vow to protect a child until she reaches adulthood. Other than these interesting facets of the storyline little can be understood of the Creatus except that they are not human (though they appear to be), do not age as humans and possess some superhuman qualities. Truthfully, I was a little disappointed that in this first book of the series we learn so little about the beings the series is named for. Still, a good story and worth reading.

More About the Author

A romantic-suspense writer, my stories overflow with romance, mystery, suspense, a hint of paranormal sometimes, and of course, tragedy. After all, what would a great story be without a tragic event setting the stage? All of my novels are sensual, but not erotic, gripping but not graphic and will make you cry, laugh, love, and hope. Although some of my titles clearly include supernatural or ghostly beings, my writing dances on the edge of the paranormal, in a genre referred to as magical realism. My hope is that as you read my stories, you'll wonder, "Hmmm...what if?"

As most authors, I blame my leap into a full-time career as a professional writer on my love of reading. Reading has always been an escape for me. When life was rough as a child, I could always disappear into a book. But I found something else too... I discovered that writing out my thoughts was healing. Not only could I create hope for my protagonists, but I could do away with the antagonists--legally.

When I penned my first novel, 'She Belongs to Me', I allowed only my cousin and best friend to read it. They are the reason I write. They pushed me to publish, as they felt my stories would give others who've experienced tragedies hope. So now, even though I still write for me, I mainly write for my readers who continually encourage me that my words touched their soul.

Most of my novels share some of my favorite hobbies, mostly, anything to do with the great outdoors. I rarely spend my days off at a movie theatre or the mall. In fact, I hate shopping, and my hubby would prefer to do anything other than take me to a movie that I'd already read the book. :) Also, we both would rather read a book on the beach--or a coffee shop if it's raining--and if the weather is really nice, we love to go kayaking and hiking.
