From the Author
MONEY. Something we all must make decisions with when we enter the real world. Yet, no one teaches you how to do just that or how to demonstrate positive money management skills.
I know. I've been there. At 23, I opened my first credit card. At 25, I had five credit cards and close to $9,000 debt. My income was barely $25,000/year. Barely able to pay my bills, I found myself financially and emotionally devastated when my job came to a screeching halt and I was laid-off. In trouble I'd never known before, I wanted to blame everyone for my situation - my parents for not teaching me about money, the credit card companies for profiting from my financial struggles and myself for spending more than I could afford to repay.
At a young age, I discovered stress unlike anything I'd ever known before. I distinctly remember pleading with my mom, "Why? Why didn't you teach me about money, about credit cards?" I remember adamantly insisting that credit cards should be illegal, no one should be allowed to sink to the depths I'd sunk to.
Well, credit cards are legal and not entirely bad, if you know what you're doing. If you don't, it takes no time to find yourself where I was. At 27, I started writing to tell young people everywhere what they need to be informed about: the dangers of credit cards and debt.
At 30, I offer you a book I wish I had when I was 19. This is the same response I've heard from hundreds of people, adults. Business men and women, parents, local musicians, top chefs, people from all industries and backgrounds, I've heard over and over again, "Where was this book before I started using credit cards?"
This book is a user's guide to understanding money, avoiding the credit trap and is full of information that goes otherwise left untaught- leaving people everywhere to learn through trial and error. Give your child the gift of financial literacy. Don't let them make financial decisions without it!
