Finally an LED bulb that behaves like a good old incandescent bulb at a fraction of the energy consumption. Most LED bulbs for household use are very directional, that is to say the light goes in more of a beam than the glow in all directions of a traditional frosted glass bulb. This one comes very close to being omnidirectional. I found a version in a color temperature (2700° Kelvin) that is closer to the warm white of a tungsten filament or halogen capsule filament bulb.

Note: The listed example is color temperature 5000° K, and the higher the number, the more blue-white it looks. In a home environment the blue-white color can seem harsh, sort of like an old fluorescent light tube.

The light output of the 2700°K example under review is 800 lumens, about the same as a CFL or incandescent rated at 60 watts. Power consumption of the LED array is just 9.5 watts at 120 volts. This unit is said to be dimmable, but I have it in a conventional hooded desk lamp so that feature has not been tested.

Two things are curious about this bulb -- the outer "glass" is coated in clear plastic like a shatterproof industrial shop bulb. It is sticky to the touch, and in an exposed lamp the surface might be attractive to dust. The other characteristic is that the vertical flanges seen between the metal base and the frosted glass run quite hot for a 9 watt bulb. It feels more like how hot a 60 watt bulb would get. Those flanges are designed to dissipate heat created by the LEDs as they produce light, and I have to assume it gets hot, thermally, as a normal running condition.

One other characteristic to note -- the bulb is about a half-inch longer than a traditional incandescent bulb. See customer photo. It should fit in most fixtures.

These bulbs are excellent. We tried five different makes and they are by far the best in terms of appearance and color. However, they are considerably cheaper to buy at Home Depot: $13:95 as opposed to approx. $20 on Amazon!
This obviously adds up when you are buying a lot of them..as we were...
Come on Amazon - you can do better!

For a few years now, I've been in search of that LED bulb that bridged the gap between energy efficiency and adequate brightness - every other bulb I'd ever tried was either too dim, produced a colored hue of some sort, or was ill-suited for general household purposes.

Not this one. Not by a long shot.

I received three of these in my mail this afternoon, installing them into a ceiling fan in my family room, replacing three standard, 60 watt non-LED light bulbs. I think just one would have sufficed, as not only is there no colored hue from this bulb, but they are considerably brighter - so bright, in fact, that I cannot look directly at them unless first dimming them.

Congratulations, Cree. You've produced the first LED light bulb that I actually think a suitable replacement for standard bulbs. I just hope that the energy savings coupled with the bulb's life span make up for the considerably higher per-unit cost.

1. To remove from the packaging, simply cut or slice from the bulb out to the edge. It will then simply tear open. VERY EASY.
2. This AMERICAN MADE bulb does NOT attract dust. I live in a very dusty environment, have had 22 of these installed, inside and outdoors, for more than 6 months, and have had absolutely NO dust attraction. The outer silicone covering of the CREE LED bulb acts as a shatterproof covering. Any accidental breakage will subsequently be confined. This is a very smart safety feature commonly used on safety lamps.
3. CREE IS BEST LIGHT BULB EVER. I have tried them all, from the CCRANE to the new PHILLIPS. CREE REIGNS. The 5K, 60W equivalent spectrum is unbelievably pure. Colors pop. It's like inside world is now lit by our dear Sun. It must be experienced to be fully appreciated. The 2.7K, 40W equivalent bulb is perfect where some gentle warmth is appropriate for the environment, such as bedside or in a den.
4. There is NO HUM or noticeable noise from these lamps. I investigated this complaint thoroughly with a sensitive microphone and spectrum analyzer. CREE's engineers have created a fantastic product - KUDOS. Those reviewers who mention this as a deficiency have some other problem(s) with their electronics or wiring (advice: check that internal and any associated connections are secure - BUT ONLY AFTER DE-ENERGIZING THE CIRCUIT). The most likely source of any hum is a cheap or defective dimmer circuit. The thyristors that control the dimming are notoriously noisy. Manufacturers often cheapen the dimming circuitry by eliminating noise suppression capacitors and/or chokes.
5. Did I mention that I am saving about $24 to $29 per month on electricity? My investment, without labor, so far has been ~$225. Payback will be less than a year.

Love these bulbs. I've been waiting for the LED bulbs to get affordable, and CREE has the technological chops to make it right. The physical distribution of light looks just like a light bulb, the color is factory adjusted to match incandescent AND perfectly match each other for a multi-bulb fixture. Packaging is a little challenging but just peel apart the cardboard and you can pop out the blister section. The dimming is excellent -- I gave up trying to dim CFLs with all their inconsistencies and unevenness and buzzing. The CREE have no perceptible buzzing and dim evenly over the whole range.

One more thing -- got these in a promotion (still going as of date of writing) at a local chain hardware store HD for $13.95, and the 40W-equivalent model for $9.95. Not sure how long it will last.

On one of my bulbs, the glass envelope came off while I was screwing it in. The store exchanged it no problem. It seems that the silicone diffuser skin had extended down over the lip of the glass envelope at the bottom, and when they epoxied it onto the base, the glue stuck to the silicone instead of the glass. Held for a little while and then the think silicone just tore off when I applied some force. Test yours by screwing them in right away after you buy them so you can exchange them if you have this problem.
