Book Description

The first edition of Halbert and Ball's Creek War was published in 1895, and a new edition containing an introductory essay, supplementary notes, a bibliography, and an index by Frank L. Owsley Jr., was published in 1969. This standard account of one of the most controversial wars in which Americans have fought is again available, with introductory materials and a bibliography revised to reflect the advances in scholarship since the 1969 edition. This facsimile reproduction of the 1895 original provides a full and sympathetic account of the Indians' point of view, from the earliest visit of the great Shawnee chief Tecumseh to the southern tribes in 1811, through the buildup of apprehension and hostilities leading to the fateful battles at Burnt Corn, Fort Mims, and Holy Ground.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A detailed and accurate account of one of the most celebrated struggles between Indians and white men."
Tennessee Historical Quarterly

"This book is both a gem and a classic. . . . Halbert and Ball provide their readers with a remarkably full, generally sympathetic, and altogether indispensable account of the Indians' point of view in the 'Red Stick War.'"
MastHead

“It is useful to have this older history of the Creek War readily available again. . . . The authors’ standards of scholarship have held up well. . . . The book is strongest on the origins of the war among the Creeks and on the first events in Mississippi territory.”    —CHOICE

4.0 out of 5 stars Most informative and one of a kind, July 29, 2011

For the day and age this book was first written (1895) it is very infomative. Halbert and Ball offers the reader first hand accounts and eye witness interviews about the Creek Indian War and the events leading up to it as well as occuring after the end of the conflict. Sadly the authors don't make out Andrew Jackson the irratic, arrogant, racist, land greedy General he was. Due to the above mentioned first hand accounts and interviews with those involved in the Creek Indian War it is one of a kind. In part because some of the eye witness and participants were still alive in the late 1800s. Not just this book, but any books on the Creek Indian War will perhaps open ones eyes to the fact the Plains and Southwestern U.S. were not the only places were there were wars against American Indians. Even so, if one is researching this subject or wants to know more about this particular war this book is highly reccommended. This most recent publication is the books third in over the past 100 years. Copies published in 1969 still exist but are rare. This in part may be the reason University of Alabama Press republished this edition. However I think it should have been published with a hard cover, as these editions would last longer then a soft cover. To me if a book is $29.95 retail it should have a hard cover. But its a very informative book none-the-less.
