Book Description

8 and up
Underwater photographer Norbert Wu and jounalist Leighton Taylor dive to the ocean's depths to show us the fascinating creatures living there. Learn why the light fish glows, how mega-mouth finds food, and how 10-foot long worms survive near the earth's core. Detailed, yet understandable, explanations of pressure and temperature bring the cold and mysterious underwater world to life, while descriptions of the unusual animals that live in the depths will fascinate young readers curious about the sea. Incredible color photographs, sidebars, and a detailed glossary accompany this engaging text and make Creeps from the Deep a useful tool for classrooms and libraries.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7?Beginning with a vivid description of the ocean depths and examples of pressure measurement, Taylor sets the scene for an introduction to some menacing, exotic creatures. For over a century, scientists in bizarre-looking apparatus have gone deeper and deeper to study life on the bottom of the ocean. They also use remote-control cameras to do their searching. Although the depths are cold, researchers have found warm-water marine animals living in "vent communities" of hot water coming from volcanic vents in the ocean floor. The informative text is complemented by colorful photos, many of which are full page. Lionel Bender's Creatures of the Deep (Gloucester, 1989; o.p.) covers sea life, but doesn't describe the ocean depths. Deborah Kovacs and Kate Madin's Beneath Blue Waters (Viking, 1996) is more technical in tone and for a slightly older audience. Taylor makes this fascinating world very accessible.?Kathleen McCabe, East Meadow Public Library, NY
