5.0 out of 5 stars Speaking of Fantagraphics' "Blazing Combat" book...
Perhaps one reason that the Fantagraphics "Blazing Combat" book is so much cheaper than Dark Horse's "Creepy" Archives is that, according to Amazon's listing, "Blazing Combat" is only going to be 8" x 5" in size! What a shame. I'm a great admirer of Fantagraphics, and own many of their excellent publications. But I'm puzzled and disappointed as to why they chose (if...

2.0 out of 5 stars Dark Horse gouges again
While I love the material contained in this volume (and am lucky enough to own the originals), I can't help but be annoyed by the ridiculous price Dark Horse wants for a 240-page b&w reprint book. You only have to look to Fantagraphics' upcoming reprint of "Blazing Combat" to see how inflated Dark Horse's retail price is. Fantagraphics is releasing a hardcover reprint...

5.0 out of 5 stars Speaking of Fantagraphics' "Blazing Combat" book..., December 4, 2008

This review is from: Creepy Archives Volume 2 (Hardcover)
Perhaps one reason that the Fantagraphics "Blazing Combat" book is so much cheaper than Dark Horse's "Creepy" Archives is that, according to Amazon's listing, "Blazing Combat" is only going to be 8" x 5" in size! What a shame. I'm a great admirer of Fantagraphics, and own many of their excellent publications. But I'm puzzled and disappointed as to why they chose (if Amazon's listing is correct)to publish "Blazing Combat" in a reduced format. I'm very thankful that Dark Horse is reprinting the Creepy Archives books full-size, with color covers intact.
At any rate, if you compare the prices between the full-sized Dark Horse book and the half-sized Fantagraphics book, they come out about even.
Regarding Creepy Archives #2, at the Amazon price it(as well as #1)is worth every penny. These are classic stories, right up there with anything EC ever did. Dark Horse's reproduction is far better than I've seen in their other archives books. I still have the first 20 or so Creepy magazines, and these reprints compare very favorably in my eyes. The involvement of Jon Cooke, the penultimate Warren collector, must have kept Dark Horse on the straight and narrow.
All I can say is, "Thanks, Dark Horse! This is a class act! Keep up the great work! And bring on Eerie!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Ghoulishly Good Archive Edition, December 16, 2008

This review is from: Creepy Archives Volume 2 (Hardcover)
Having grown up in the '70's, I was there for the tail-end of the CREEPY/EERIE era, but I missed all of the earlier issues that have since reached near-mythic proportions among collectors, and there have never really been any reprints, at least none that I knew of....So I was thrilled when Dark Horse announced they were going to be issuing chronological reprints of CREEPY and EERIE. (My enthusiasm was dampened when I learned they were going to be priced at $49.95 per volume, though....) So, with mixed anticipation and dread, I shelled out my fifty clams for CREEPY ARCHIVES VOLUME ONE, and was blown away. Picking up Volume Two was a no-brainer.

I'm not going to join the debate about the reproduction quality or the price point. I've been collecting comics for almost my entire life, and I remember how lousy some of those old newsprint Warren Books looked....The CREEPY ARCHIVES looks gorgeous. Without the original issues to compare them to, that's more than enough for me. The quality of the paper is top-notch, and the color cover reproductions look stunning, as does the black-and-white interior art. And considering that I spent five or six hours reading this book, I'm not too bothered by the fifty dollar price point, especially since you can buy it considerably cheaper on Amazon. It's great entertainment value for the money. The art ranges from decent to stunning; It's great to see forgotten work from EC greats such as Reed Crandall and Joe Orlando, Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko, and early work from legends such as Gene Colan and Alex Toth. This volume also features fan art that just might be the first published work from Nick Cuti, Frank Brunner, and the legendary Berni Wrightson. The stories can be a bit of a mixed bag, and they certainly pale in comparison to the classic EC tales, but then again, what wouldn't? There's not really any groundbreaking writing here, but most of it is very enjoyable, and I'll certainly be back for Volume Three. And bring on the EERIE ARCHIVES, Dark Horse!

5.0 out of 5 stars No Wonder, January 2, 2009

This review is from: Creepy Archives Volume 2 (Hardcover)
I bought my husband the first CREEPY ARCHIVE in August of 2008 and he couldn't wait for the second edition. I find the art work beautiful. Each story is like a mini-movie and most of the stories pull you right into the art panels. No wonder he loved these magazines. He has many of the original CREEPY EERIE and VAMPIRELLA's the new prints really show off the fine art work involved. So now he is ready for CREEPY ARCHIVES VOLUME 3 and EERIE. My husband hopes that VAMPIRELLA would be printed like CREEPY and EERIE but he thinks someone else other than DARK HORSE has the I guess to say copy rights? I recommend these books to any collector, especially those that had them when they were growing up. The price for them with Amazon is a very fair and low price for this quality of work. Just as soon as they become available I will be here ordering them!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Archives Vol. Two ... CREEPY ... Frazetta/Morrow/Orlando ... Dark Horse (2008)", October 28, 2011
This review is from: Creepy Archives Volume 2 (Hardcover)
Dark Horse Comics presents "CREEPY ARCHIVES VOL.2 HC" [Hardcover], Creepy originals #6-10 ~ Love the way Dark Horse has put them together, started collecting 'Creepy' and Eerie Archives, which I own the originals and was also involved in the fan club roster. Love the Frazetta cover art #7 with a Werewolf battling a Vampire, 'Duel of the Monsters'.

Covers by Frank Frazetta (covers #6, 7, 9 & 10) and Gray Morrow (covers #8) each cover an original. Plus Neal Adams, Dan Adkins, Gene Colan, Johnny Craig, Reed Crandall, Steve Ditko, George Evans, Jerry Grandenetti, Roy D. Krenkel, Rocco Mastroserio, Al McWilliams, Joe Orlando, John Severin, Jay Taycee, Angelo Torres, Alex Toth, George Tuska, Al Williamson, Wally Wood ~ with Jim Warren, with boss man calling all the shots.

Time to get down to NUTS and BOLTS, beasties...our MECHANICAL MARVEL has returned again! Watch, you don't get strangled by the ticker-tape as we join...ADAM LINK IN BUSINESS! With artist Joe Orlando and writer creator Eando Binder ... Adam Link is a robot, who has a tender heart and good morals, the reporter who got him off from being destroyed has a girlfriend, Kay Temple, who is flesh and blood, for some reason has a thing for Adam. In his memoirs he sees this and goes off to a cabin in the Ozarks. Not choosing to replace his central battery, he is slowly weakening. In part two sequel ADAM LINK'S MATE, as Creepy states every guy should have a GHOUL...even if she's another robot, Well we've seen the BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, let's hope this is an improvement. Great story and art by Uncle Creepy's leading illustrator and teller of tales.

For product description and editorial review check this out on the Amazon site above my review.

* Special footnote: -- Joe Orlando from Bari, Italy born April 4, 1927 was an illustrator, writer and editor for DC Comics and Mad Magazine... was Creepy's editor for Warren Publishing's black-and-white horror-comics magazine, debuting in 1964, Joe Orlando had a gift for story development that the industry did not recognize for many years to come. Joe was at the studio just about every day, so he had plenty of time come up stories, that would, for most part, never see print. The scripts were written, and assigned to the appropriate artists. Warren had set down his own code. We would show no blood and gore. Nothing that would bring the Comics Code Authority knocking at his front door. Orlando was not only an illustrator but also a story editor on early issues. His credit on the first issue masthead read ... Story Ideas: Joe Orlando. With Inkpot Award 1980 and Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame 2007. Became a naturalized American (immigrated Italian), he passed away on December 23, 1998 at age 71, in Manhattan New York.

Warren and Dark Horse rekindled my interest and appetite ~ Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars The price ain't that Creepy!, December 16, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Creepy Archives Volume 2 (Hardcover)
These are classics stories done by some of the best artists to ever hold a pen or pencil. I have a soft spot for b/w and horror, so this book was a must buy. I don't feel Dark Horse is gouging anybody. This is a nicely done collection just as Creepy Archives volume one is. I am looking forward to the Eerie archives and Fantagraphics Blazing Combat reprint.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOP NOTCH!!!!, December 3, 2008
This review is from: Creepy Archives Volume 2 (Hardcover)
This is truly a great archive. If it's as good as #1, I'll be in seventh heaven. I read the previous post and can't help but think this is some disgruntled artist or writer who used to work for Warren. This archive series is of the highest quality and with dozens of color plates and an obvious attention to design detail and reproduction, this is a truly gorgeous package, I have absolutely no quarrel with the price at 288 pages. I can only hope they continue all the way through so i can collect every volume. I do not have all the old issues but to collect them would be way more than $49.00. The cover is startling. I don't remember this cover but I find it to be authentically scary. Can't wait to get the Toth stuff and of course Ditko, Williamson at al... Hate to say it but if you can't afford $49 for all this, maybe you need a new day job.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST HORROR MAGS EVER!, November 19, 2009
This review is from: Creepy Archives Volume 2 (Hardcover)
How can people not love Dark Horse Comics? I never thought I'd see these classic Warren magazines reprinted but Dark Horse has come to the rescue of all of us horror fans who grew up on Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella in the 1970s. Volume two of the hardcover archive series reprints Creepy #6 - 10 in their entirety, complete with ads and letter columns. To go along with Frank Frazetta covers, the artists in this volume include Alex Toth, Gray Morrow, Reed Crandall, John Severin, and more. The stories include adaptations of Poe's "Cask of Amontillado"; Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Body Snatcher"; and the Lovecraft-style tale "The Thing in the Pit". It does not get any better than this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great art, great fun, great memories., March 8, 2009
This review is from: Creepy Archives Volume 2 (Hardcover)
In this well produced and finely presented republication of the old Warren Horror magazine, Dark Horse have excelled themselves. Reminiscing about a childhood spent leafing through such material in far less fine form with torn pages and the like, it's a pleasure to hold a solidly made and properly printed volume in one's hand. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars archives a fun way to see past issues, March 2, 2009

I love this archive edition. I love that they kept the ads in here, also. Although I didn't get to read CREEPY until the mid-7o's, I always remember the fun ads they had. And the stories are always entertaining, scary, fun and, yes, CREEPY! A beautiful edition to my bookcase and life. These are the issues I never had an opportunity to get my hands on.
