Book Description

8 and up3 and up
Creepy Campfire Tales vol. 1 features 11 all original horror stories that take place during the Halloween and Autumn season in New England and Ohio state parks, though some are at even more secluded camp sites or cabins. All are great tales to read or tell around campfires since a campfire or campground is an integral part of every story. These are not lame retellings of urban legends or outdated ghost stories, but rather innovative rural horror. You'll feel the coziness of a warm campfire on a cold October night as unexpected horrors unfold during pumpkin carving contests, Halloween hayrides, and within the darkness of nearby bodies of water. Experience shapeless monsters, demonic spirits, scarecrows gone wild, zombies, a vampire, an evil radio station, hideous creatures in the woods, and more. The level of horror rises as the book progresses, but the series also aims to interject some spooky fun, although most of the stories end on a rather horrific note. This book is aimed at the young adult market and every story but one feature teens as the main characters, but many adults, including librarians who love great Halloween stories, have enjoyed it. This book has been received with gasps, shivers, and even a few nervous chuckles at readings the author has done at public schools and state campgrounds (See www.JamesDAdams.com for testimonies from school staff and students). Most of the Stories take place in October, with one in September, many during Halloween camp outs at state campgrounds in. www.CreepyCampfireTales.com is the companion web site that includes updates to the stories within and glimpses of future titles in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter can't put it down, April 9, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Creepy Campfire Tales Vol. One Halloween Camp Out (Paperback)
My wife and I are always encouraging our daughter to read but she doesn't like the typical girly books so I ordered this for her because she loves Halloween, campfires, roasting marshmallows and by the description it seemed she might like this book. She was so excited when I surprised her with it and she raced through homework to start reading. From the moment she picked it up she couldn't put it down and it took a mild scolding to get her to stop reading and into bed. The book is a collection of spooky short stories that were exciting and suspenseful but not so bad she had scary dreams. Mr. Adams if you are reading, please hurry with volume two, you have a young fan driving me crazy asking if you are going to write more.

My daughter and son in law pitched a tent this past winter in the family room and camped in front of the fireplace on a cold winter night the book was a big hit with the kids ranging from 4- 7. 4 may have been a little young but this would be good for older kids too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fuel for the creatively challenged story teller!, June 18, 2008
This review is from: Creepy Campfire Tales Vol. One Halloween Camp Out (Paperback)
It's always fun to tell ghost stories around a fire late at night, but coming up with something original isn't always easy. Adams has offerred us a collection of truly original tales that make for a spooky evening.

Adams has a knack for the original while he mixes small-town nastalgia with evil lurking just around the corner, or on the radio, or in the pond, or in the woods.

I'd love to read a full length effort from JA in the future.
