Fun for the Little Tykes!,
By History_of_Art_Geek (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Six Creepy Sheep (Paperback)
Six Creepy Sheep is really clever. The text is fun to read aloud as long as you take it slow, because it can be a tongue twister. The phrase, "Then, on little sheep feet, six creepy sheep went a-haunting" is repeated with each sheep disappearance. Try saying that out loud. It's difficult to articulate rapidly.
There's nothing scary about this story, and it's very enjoyable for adults as well. Six Creepy Sheep is a short, and is appropriate for children 2-years and up. My son was 2 when I bought this book, and he wasn't frightened in the least. I'm not sure how the illustrator was able to convey expressions. All of the characters are masked throughout most of the book, (even the farmer at the end), yet somehow we understand their emotions. The encounter with the animals is the cutest part of the book. My only grumble with this book is that it's a bit short. If there were 10 sheep, rather than 6 it would be more satisfying, or perhaps if the six sheep go forward in number, and then backwards like Sandra Boynton's, Hippos Go Berserk, it would add to the length. The fact that it's short, doesn't take away from its quality; overall, Six Creepy Sheep is a super find!

This review is from: Six Creepy Sheep (Trumpet Club Special Edition) (Paperback)
Whether you're familiar with the first in this series (Six Sleepy Sheep), or whether you've just found this book, you're in for a treat! The book follows the tale of six sheep who go out for some spooky trick-or-treating fun. The downside? These sheep are scared of EVERYTHING! Alliteration is as plentiful in this book as it was in the first, and there's the adorable slant-rhyming 'chorus', of course. My daughter (22 months) is a huge fan of this book (as am I), and especially loves the ending. The art is fantastic and whimsical, but may be a little busy for babies and young toddlers. Even so, this books is a lovely introduction to the Halloween holiday for any child!
