5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic idea for "hot-swapping" hard drives..., April 29, 2010

If one combines this with one of those gizmos that allows you to transfer files with a hard drive that just lies on top of your desk, (with no enclosure), you will impress your nerd friends! The thing is remarkably inexpensive and seems sturdy enough. It definitely works without problem. I just can't figure out why some of these things don't cost more than they do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well built, but noisey fan, April 17, 2010

This internal drive bay is well made and allows you to swap hard internal drives w/o opening your computer's case. I have no problem with it, except for one concern--the fan on the back is too loud. Also, the fan does not turn off when you remove the drive. It's on 100%, 100% of the time

I have six 120mm fans in my CM Stacker case and this little 40mm fan is louder than all of my 120mm fans together, even when they are running at full speed. To it's credit, it does move an incredible amount of air for such a small fan, but you don't need that much air moving over the HD to keep it within operating temps. Perhaps if they disk were running at near capacity for extended periods, such as in a busy server rack, then the air flow would be necessary. However, if you're running such a system, you're most likely not using this type of drive bay.

You might want to try the "Kingwin mobile rack" if fan noise bothers you. My friend has several, and he says their fans are inaudible. Kingwin KF-812-BK - Storage mobile rack - 3.5" - black

One star off for a noisy fan.
