Yet Another Side of David Murray, October 2, 2001

It is hard to believe that there is any jazz artist living or dead that has more recordings under his or her own name than David Murray. I realize that even though I have attempted to be very selective over the years I still have at least 30 recordings. It would normally seem likely that such exposure would produce endless repetitions of the same themes, sounds and experiences. Yet Murray is still capable of coming up with fresh approaches. This recording is a fine reflection of the exploration of Creole musical influence and in that respect reminds me of Coltrane's Kulu Se Mama. This recording, however, for many listeners, will be more accessible than the Coltrane masterpiece. The mix of instruments (including drums, quitar and french patois) plunges the listener into a mix in which Murray's use of the tenor in unique voice-mode does not over power but complements the accomplements of an all star cast. (This is a delightful change from many Murray recordings in which he overpowers the sidemen). There is a worldbeat feel to this recording that satisfies and inspires.
