Many of the poems in Creole Journal are based on individuals who lived in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Many were free people of color. The relations between owners and slaves and the mulattoes and quadroons they produced are the subject of some of the poems. Several of the poems are presented in the Creole language with the English translations on opposite pages. Creole phrases are sprinkled throughout the book with footnotes to explain their meaning, as well as a glossary at the end to assist the reader.

About the Author
Sybil Kein is a New Orleans Creole poet, playwright, scholar, and musician. Her Gombo People (1981) represents the first original literature in the Louisiana Creole Language. She remains the foremost authority of Creole as a distinct language. Among other books, she is the author of text, Creole: The History and Legacy of Louisiana s Free People of Color (2000). For many years a distinguished professor at The University of Michigan-Flint, she has returned to her native state where she continues to collect and record Creole songs and research the migration of the tri-racial people of Louisiana.
