4.0 out of 5 stars Is it time for reparations?, March 29, 2008

This review is from: Crescent City Countdown (Paperback)
CRESCENT CITY COUNTDOWN by Ronald M. Gauthier starts off with a murder happening in front of a hotel with an executive shot down in broad daylight. Private Detective Jeanette Plaisance is on the scene, trying to find the two elusive witnesses to the crime. From the very start, nothing seems to go her way. Her baby's father, Kareem, has just been released from prison after doing 18 years for a crime he didn't commit. Their son, Joshua, who enlisted the aid of the journalism students at his university, as well as lawyers who are fighting to get innocent men released from prison, is thrilled to finally be with his father. Unfortunately, evidence begins to point at Kareem as the killer. Will Jeanette be able to find the real murderer while keeping her marriage together with her police officer husband now that Kareem is on the scene?

CRESCENT CITY COUNTDOWN is an amazing mystery that goes into post-Katrina New Orleans with the violence that has started plus the difficulties the African American citizens are having returning to their previous lives. It also gives the history of slavery as witnessed by Jeanette's family and why her brother is suing several corporations for reparations. There were so many subplots that occasionally, I forgot about the original murder. Fortunately, in the end, it was all pulled together. The history and the conditions of New Orleans made all the subplots worthwhile.
