Works very well from everything I've seen so far. We have a 4 yr. old who continually opens his 2nd story window, and putting bars up is not an option. Key thing I've learned is to place the bottom of the velcro strip as close to the middel of the window sash as possible...and then affix the wedge close to it as well. This allows my kid to only open the window a hairsbreadth and doesn't give him enough leverage to open it further.

We are living in a three story rental house for a year, so placing bars or more permanent child-proofing on the upper story windows (where the bedrooms are) was not an option for us, but I did want to try to make the bedroom windows as safe as possible for my 2-1/2 and five year olds. The windows in this house are VERY tall and heavy, with an upper latch quite high up, so they are difficult for a child to open when locked, but I was concerned about them falling out if the windows were already opened. This is the perfect option to allow the windows to be open a few inches to let in breeze, but not enough for them to lean over to fall out through the screens. We did find that we had to use two of the wedges on a few of the windows to really feel like they were secure, and if this was a house we owned I would definitely go with a more permanent and foolproof option.

delays access, doesn't prevent it,

This wedge seems to work well when it's in place, but it's not terribly difficult to remove. Two of our kids (ages 3 and 1) climb up and unlock the window and have, on one occasion, been able to remove the wedge. Still, it's probably a good option that strikes a balance between delaying a child's access and not blocking an exit in an emergency.

Completely useless - the windows just slide right over them. How anyone managed to get these things to work is beyond me.

did not work at all,

I loved the idea of these window wedges, but they did not work at all on our double hung windows. I put them in place according to instructions, when I opened the window, it met a little resistance, and then just opened over top of the window wedge. I tried placing them in several different areas hoping to find someplace that worked, but it just didn't...perhaps it's just our brand of window..but definately not something I would trust in a second story window with toddlers.

dangerous item!,

My friend has these and her 3 year old opened the window anyways and fell out of the second story window. She's ok, but this product and those like it can not be trusted for safety!

The wedge is secured by a weak piece of velcro! There is no way this would keep anyone out (or kids in if you are getting it for window safety)! I had to go out and buy hardware to screw the wedge into the window frame so that it is secure and actually does any good.

Measure your window frame first!,

Our window frame is only 1 cm wide - too narrow for the window wedge to install properly. I am guessing you would need at least 1.5 cm width or more. I tried contacting Cresci Products for a workaround but never got a response. I really wish this restriction would have been mentioned in the product information.

We purchased these for our second story windows, to prevent our 2 year old from opening windows when/if he wanders around at night. My husband and I have both tested these, and are very happy with them. We installed them very close to top of the lower sash, so our son can't open the window more than just a crack. I like that it can be easily removed in case of emergency.

I have a number of different sized windows (sash, new plastic type windows) in my baby's room and I installed these on each window - two on the wider/larger window. Easy to install and works well. Even when I open a window and forget they are on the window, they stop me opening the window too far.Just follow the instructions, to make sure the wedge is secure. Can be easily repositioned. |
