This is a coy and mysterious epistolary tale, a collusion of photographs and story fashioned by a pseudonymous author. It begins with a memo from two investigative agents reporting on the aftermath of a plane crash. The flight recorder was not found, but a purse containing photos, letters, and phone message tapes was, and these rescued documents form the novel itself. It's just after the San Francisco earthquake of 1989, and young Austrian astrochemist Sara Berlin writes a letter of complaint to camera maker Andre Optic. Business quickly turns into pleasure, and their letters record a budding romance as Sara leaves for Germany. Their sexy and argumentative letters keep their passion alive, and they keep up their correspondence even after Andre arrives in Germany. The Berlin Wall has fallen, and the lovers banter continually over Germany's legacy of horror and uncertain future as well as the configuration of their own complex relationship. What exactly becomes of this strong-willed couple? This is a romance, after all, however oblique, and so we must assume a happy ending. Mona Lowan
