How to Use

1. Peel:

For best results, do not brush teeth immediately before applying strips. Open foil pouch and remove. Peel strips from backing.

2. Apply:

• Apply gel side of strip to teeth.
• Align strips with gum line and press gently for good contact.
• Fold the rest of strip behind teeth to keep in place.

3. Reveal:

• Wear strips for 5 minutes once a day, remove and discard.
• If you notice gel on your teeth, brush, rinse, or wipe it away.
• Use daily for gradual whitening.

What is Tartar

Calcium and phosphate bind to form crystals on the teeth, which eventually harden within plaque, forming tartar. Certain types of chemicals called pyrophosphates help to decrease tartar buildup by stopping the growth of crystals and helping prevent new crystals from forming.

How to protect against tartar.

Have your teeth cleaned professionally every 6 months, or more frequently as recommended by your dentist or hygienist. Whiten with Crest Whitestrips Daily Whitening + Tartar Protection which contains pyrophosphate which adheres to your tooth and works to prevent formation and growth of tartar. Brush with a toothpaste that contains pyrophosphate, such as Crest® Tartar Protection, which adheres to the tooth surface and inhibits the formation or growth of calculus crystals. Crest Whitestrips-Daily Multicare Formula and Tartar Protection is designed for "maintenance" bleaching, to maintain the whiteness of your teeth once the desired shade has been reached. Therefore, one should use a Crest Strip product such as the entry-level system Classic Whitestrips Classic Whitestrips-Crest Dental Whitening System, 56 Strips, or a stronger product like Crest Whitestrips Premium Crest Whitestrips Premium- 7- Day Dental Whitening Formula System, 28 Strips before the Daily Multicare Formula with Tarar Inhibitor is used.

This product is used for just 5 minutes a day to maintain the whiteness of (previously) bleached teeth. (All the other Crest Whitestrip products advise a 30-minute treatment, once or twice a day protocol). There are virtually no side-effects, such as sensitive teeth, or "burned" gums, as the contact time is just 5 minutes. This system has a 6% hydrogen peroxide gel, the same as Crest Classic Whitestrips. A tartar inhibitor is included for those who form tartar easily.

An alternative to this product of daily bleaching maintenance is to use one of the original systems again, such as Classic Whitestrips for 1-2 weeks to restore the bleach white color of the teeth.

Crest White Strips come in as many as 7 different formulations, which can be quite confusing to the consumer. Please remember the key difference in all these products is the strength of the hydrogen peroxide gel, and of course the price. The higher the dose of hydrogen peroxide, the faster the bleaching result, and the most costly as well. Here is a quick summary of the products:

1. Crest White Strips Classic. This is Crest's first bleaching product, introduced in 2001. It has a 6% hydrogen peroxide gel, and is applied twice a day for 30 minutes for 14-days of treatment. It is still a very popular product, and perhaps offers the lowest number of side-effects.

2. Crest White Strips Premium came out in 2004. It is a 10% hydrogen peroxide gel, applied twice a day for 30 minutes each session, for 7-days of treatment. The 10% hydrogen peroxide strength offers a quicker bleaching result, but perhaps with more tooth and gum sensitivity.

3. Crest Pro Effects came out in 2008. It is another 10% hydrogen peroxide gel, but offers a 10-day treatment protocol - again, twice a day for 30 minutes each time.

4. Crest Advanced Seal is the latest product (February, 2009), and it also has a 10% hydrogen peroxide, twice a day, 30-minutes a day, 10-day treatment. The main advantage to this system is that the strip is more adherent to the teeth, and the user can talk, exercise, drive, be active, even drink fluids, with the strip in place. The other systems advise the user to be stationary for the 30-minute treatment time.

5. Daily Whitening Multicare is another 6% hydrogen peroxide gel strip. It is used just 5-minutes/day. The only difference between this product and the featured product is the lack of a tartar inhibitor.

In using any of the Crest bleaching products, please follow the specified instructions that come with each product.

Crest White Strip products work for the vast majority of people. Younger people with yellow stains seem to respond better than older people or those with gray stains. If you have severely stained teeth, especially those with tetracycline (an antibiotic) stain, the strips may not work well for you.

If you are not satisfied with the results and still want whiter teeth, you can then see your dentist for a more concentrated in-office form of bleaching (called "power bleaching").

I gave this product a 3-star rating, as I don't think the consumer needs a tartar-inhibitor in the bleaching agent. Normal everyday brushing and flossing should keep tartar away.

I have been buying Crest Whitestrips,annually,for deveral years. They worked fine, but were somewhat cumbersom to use. They needed to be applied twice daily, and left on for 30 minutes each time, and the whole treatment took about a month to complete.

Now, the new Crest Whitstrips Daily Whitening and Tartar Control, to me are far easier to use. They should be applied each day, once, and left on for 5 minutes. I find this year-round program much easier and less time consuming than the old 30 day program. Also, the teeth stay white all year, not needing a boost each year, as before.

I previousely bought the Whitestrips from Costco, and got the first supply of the new 5 minute strips from them also, but found they were difficult to find once Costco had moved on to other Crest products. Searching the web, I discovered Amazon listed them so that's where I now obtain them.

I love this product. I have naturally yellowish teeth that I've been self-conscious about all my life (and I don't make them any whiter by drinking Coke Zero daily), but they're also incredibly sensitive. All other whitening products I've tried have left them aching for days afterward, so I was excited to try Daily Whitening strips when they came out because they were supposed to be more gentle. They are. I've been using them for over a year now and my tooth sensitivity hasn't changed. More importantly, they work, and the difference has been striking. After only a few weeks of use, my husband (who is normally oblivious to such things) stopped himself mid-conversation to exclaim, "Wow! Your teeth are really white!". He's not been the only one to notice or to compliment me on my teeth, which has been pretty amazing. I've also noticed a difference in how my teeth feel that I attribute to the tartar protection in the product - they stay much smoother and cleaner-feeling between cleanings, and my dental hygienist always comments on how little buildup I have. It's also been really easy to integrate 5 minutes of tooth-whitening into my morning routine.

I'm glad to find Daily Whitening strips on Amazon because I haven't been able to find them anywhere locally for the last few months. I fear this means they're being discontinued. Please, Crest, no!!
