It's made of cast iron clad in two coats of Le Creuset's famous hard enamel. As cast iron is unexcelled for heat distribution and retention and enamel is impervious to acids and odors, the dish cooks food uniformly and gently without hot spots and can be used for marinating. It goes safely on any stovetop, including induction, so it can be used for browning meat before going into the oven. The dish has a heavy lid and its sides slant slightly, making it easy to slide out a loaf of bread or to scrape out the last of a casserole. It measures 7 inches square and 3-1/2 inches deep. Like all Le Creuset cast-iron cookware, the baker was made in France using a one-of-a-kind mold that ensures each piece's uniqueness.
