It's made of cast iron, with both exterior and interior clad in two coats of enamel. The exterior color, called granite, is a departure for Le Creuset. Famous for its bright colors, Le Creuset introduced the sleek, satin-finish, dark charcoal granite to complement the minimalist, contemporary look of many stainless-steel-accented kitchens.

As cast iron is unexcelled for heat distribution and retention and enamel is impervious to acids and odors, the oven (or casserole) browns and cooks food uniformly and gently without hot spots and can be used for marinating. It's safe on any stovetop, including induction, and dishwasher-safe. The plastic knob on its heavy, tight-fitting lid is ovenproof to 450 degrees F. Like all Le Creuset cast-iron products, it's hand cast in a one-of-a-kind sand mold and hand finished at the Le Creuset factory in France.
