This crock actually works. You'll have room temperature butter anytime you want it. It holds about 1 and 1/2 sticks of butter. Just bring the butter to room temperature, pack it tightly in the upside-down cup, fill the base with a little water, and your butter will stay fresh and at room temperature. Although the instructions suggest changing the water every 3-4 days, I find that I only need to change it about once every 10 days or so. When using the butter, be careful to remove it evenly from the top working your way down. If you take too much from one side, the glob of butter will end up sliding out of the cup and down into the water when you pull out the cup. When the cup is full of butter, you'll have some water clinging to its surface, but blotting with a paper towel will easily solve that problem.

I've had other 'butter keepers', but this one is top shelf. It's larger than most and feels heavy in the hand (in a good way). The blue glaze is evenly washed and I found no flaws. The inside is an earthen brown.
I found mine holds a little more than a stick of butter. I let the stick soften on the counter so it's easy to insert while I have the crock cooling in the refrigerator. NO, you don't ever have to place the crock in the refrigerator, NOT ever. I do it so the softened stick will cool and set quicker. If the butter is too warm while trying to place it in the mold, it can fall out. This won't happen if you a)don't over soften it before inserting b)cool the crock first. I've done it w/out cooling and works just fine. But if you read a reviewer who says the butter won't stay in, they let the butter get too soft before putting it in the mold. The water in the base of the crock is filled to the 'fill line' and does a lovely job of keeping the butter fresh, soft, but not too soft or warm. I've been in French kitchens and some chefs literally leave their butter on the counter...all day long. I guess they use enough of it that it won't go bad. If you want butter that's easily at hand and soft enough to use, this is it. It makes all of the butter crocks out there look antiseptic. I love it!

This product is a fabulous addition to our kitchen.
My Dutch wife wouldn't have it any other way. :) If we could, all of our products would be Le Creuset Stoneware - it's just quality cookware that is pleasing to the eye.

This Butter Crock is awesome. VERY important. You must actually use butter. Not mixes or margarines. They have too high an oil content and will not stay in the crock. You home should also be cooler than 80° F otherwise the butter will be too soft. I have had mine for over a year and if rocks.

Soft, real butter and a nice presentation,

Love that we can have real butter, spreadable, and kept at the right temperature. It works well, seals well, and is a nice piece of pottery on top of that. Great countertop accessory. You could probably get one for less that's not the Le Creuset brand and it would work just as well, but this matches our other Le Creuset pieces so that's kind of fun.

Bought this butter keeper because it was made in France as shown in product description. Was disappointed when I recieved it as it was made in Thailand. I was willing to pay higher price for this item if it had been made in France

It works fine if you follow the directions supplied with the crock, for sheer utility I would rate it at five stars. However I was shocked to learn when it arrived that it was made in Thailand, not France, as one would expect from Le Creuset. Honestly for $30 I did not expect to get an outsourced product bearing the Le Crueset badge. I'm disappointed that Amazon failed to disclose the country of origin for this product upfront, before purchase.

I bought this butter crock because it's from a good line of cookware so I thought I would be getting a high quality product. Unfortunately, this is not so. The way this crock is made butter will not stay in the bell portion! I'm going to by myself a different crock. I guess we'll only use this one when we need more than one crock.

There was never a chance to use this item as it was delivered twice cracked and broken. Whoever was responsible for shipping it did not take even the most rudimentary precautions for shipping the item and it was delivered to the recipient not only once, but twice broken. I will be very hesitant to use this mode of purchase again especially for a gift item.
