For Amazon:
I was born in 1927 at my grandmother's old house in Hominy, Oklahoma. My father was an oil field worker and my mother was a teacher. I grew up in Tulsa, and attended Will Rogers High. I then attended Harvard College and Medical School on scholarship, where I played the bass violin in several orchestras, as well as for swing, jazz, and square dance bands. I interned at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital where I met a lovely student nurse, Ellie Haglund and we married while I was still a resident physician at Boston Children's Hospital. We moved to Seattle in 1957, and had three sons (subsequently six grandchildren). I joined the faculty of the University of Washington in the Department of Pediatrics and founded the division of Pediatric Cardiology. I worked 80 hours a week but finally took my true love skiing at Sun Valley and she forgave me. She permitted me to climb mountains, for a total of 508, including previously unclimbed Mt. Lodge in Alaska. Although I preferred climbing to traveling, after a month in China as an exchange professor accompanied by Ellie, I began to travel with her and we eventually visited 18 countries together. The most memorable trip to Central America was just before our 50th wedding anniversary and we fell in love more deeply than ever, with an intensity that lasted the rest of our life together. She was literally glowing when we celebrated our anniversary with 60 friends and family. Only a couple of months later, Ellie was diagnosed with lung cancer although she never smoked; she survived 2 ½ years of chemotherapy and she stayed in her own house with hospice care. (After her death I presented our totem pole to the University of Washington in her name; you can see it in the foyer of University Tower--formerly Safeco.) I suffered from her loss more than anything I had experienced or imagined; I lost my paradise! I have continued to work full time (my escape). I have 322 publications--mostly scientific, including 5 books. I was the first American to publish a call for the back-to-sleep position to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. Two of my books were non-fiction: Climbing with Sasha, a Siberian Husky was published in 1995 (out of print) and Paradise Found and Lost (2009). Two years after Ellie's death, I married her best friend and room mate in nursing school, Sally Cornish, the final generous gift to me from Ellie. I am finishing another book on my life.
