At 96 pages, I wasn't expecting this to be so useful, but it doesn't waste pages explaining the rules and how to add up points. It assumes you already play cribbage, and concentrates on the area of the game in which the player has the most control, the play of the hand. If you want a book that does have the rules and basics, try Play Cribbage to Win by the same author, different publisher. And if you want to tackle really complex aspects of the game, try Winning Cribbage Tips and/or Miracles on 4th Street. They're all excellent.

It's not a long book and I have read quickly through it twice already. In two passes, I've had at least three "Oh, right!" moments and it has already changed the way I discard to the crib and play. A simple and detailed explanation of logic behind cribbage.

If you are looking for a book that explains the rules of cribbage or basic cribbage strategies - this is not it. This is a book for experienced cribbage players who are looking to improve their game. The book focuses almost entirely on how to peg more points. I thought it was great. I consider myself an experienced cribbage players and within a few minutes of picking up the book I learned that some of my pegging strategies were hurting my game. This is exactly what I was looking for.

A good book, but not the final word on cribbage. There are newer and more effective strategies than given here. And, cribbage can be played differently - it's not all cut and dry. A good beginning here though.

I'd rank this as the best of Barlow's cribbage books, though some others might choose Miracles on 4th Street. Both titles include a hefty dose of Barlow's cribbage strength, which is end-game evaluation. Cribbage for Experts, with a little bit wider focus and a bit more accessible of a format, is probably the second or third cribbage book players should acquire, DeLynn Colvert's Play Winning Cribbage still being the best.

This book is all about playing the hand. What to lead, now to respond, and how to continue. The goal is to make as many points (pegging) as possible while denying your opponent the same opportunity.

It does not cover rules, scoring hands, or the strategy behind discarding. It assumes you understand when points are awarded during play.

Back to what it is… It’s less than 100 pages, big print, more than a few large diagrams. It presents common situations and goes through the logic behind making good choices. Some of it is “chess-like”, If you do this then she can do that and then you’ll get to do something even better or she might do this other thing in which case… Turns out there is a fair amount of reasoning and the game isn’t as much about luck as you might think.

Some of the strategies are presented as simple rules of thumb. Thing you might know already or perhaps may have learned the opposite. Other aspects are guidelines where you need to concentrate a bit more than normal to master. Finally, it gets you into the head of a successful player and give you a sense of ways you can win more games.

However much of this book you care to absorb, it will give you a greater appreciation for playing a cribbage hand and more likely than not, make you more successful at doing it.
