Smashing!, June 25, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cricket 07 (CD-ROM)
A game for all cricket enthusiasts, even in the US of A. Gaming options range from the full monty of a summer's long series (playing a full Australian tour, friendlies and minor sides included) to the limited overs smash-a-thon. My son and I played a 5 over England v Australia game the other morning before school.
The dual stick controls of this game offers real skill in both batting & bowling. 2-man option offers plenty of scope for run-outs.
Bowling options and field placement can be finely tuned to equate with whatever the state of play.
As in most sport games the commentary can get a little repetative, and the graphics are not exactly spectacular: Freddie looks a little like his Australopithecus cousin.
After playing this game Josh & Nibbs (14 yrs old) both hopped over the fence to play real cricket in the field. A recommendation indeed.

What a disgrace?!?, July 1, 2008
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cricket 07 (CD-ROM)
EA Sports makes some of the best games. Cricket is certainly not one of them. EA Sports has been a complete disgrace to Cricket. And compared to the previous versions, Cricket '07 is no better than '05. In fact, you could even argue that Cricket 2005 is a lot better. For one thing, there are still quite a few bugs in the game that have been transferred over from previous versions. And that is just part of the story. There are so many new errors in the game. Bowlers are constantly bowling over 10 overs in one-day games. This is a shameful cricketing error. Furthermore, now and then bowlers' overs get set to zero, even though they may have bowled six or seven overs. I have no idea how/why that happens.
That is just one example of one error. There are more. When you play tournaments and set records using a player, they never show up in the statistics, at times. Sometimes, in a list of ten records, if you have about four players who have set records, the fifth player's record overwrites a previous player's record, even if the prior player's record was a better one. This does not happen once or twice. This happens all the time and new lower records completely erase the previous higher records almost all the time. All this tells me that EA Sports designed this game in some sort of a hurry to get it released into the market, without paying attention to many of the intricate details of the game.
EA Sports 2005 did not have the above error or some of the other errors that are found in 2007, which provides more proof that EA Sports really rushed through with the design of this game.
EA sports also lost its license for half the teams. So, the players of half the teams have made-up names. But, to be fair, this is not the game-maker's fault. If the players' associations or boards are charging too much money, EA Sports obviously cannot afford it.
Commentary is pretty much the same. Nothing creative or innovative added here. One of the commentators has changed. That is all that can be said about this. They could have made this more realistic. You never have two commentators for an entire match. You always have more than two - 4 or 5 to be accurate. Codemasters has done a better job with this.
Even what I mentioned in the above paragraph can be forgiven. But, complete disregard for the rules of the sport, and the actual skill levels of each of the players is inexcusable. And EA Sports has not done this once. It has done it continuously with every release. There are so many rule-related errors that EA Sports has made, leave alone graphic glitches. The list is just way too long.
I hate to say this...EA Sports has done an atrocious job with this game. I will say, however, that EA Sports still ranks high, but only because they really have no competitors for video game cricket. No one besides Codemasters anyway. And may I say Codemasters has done a wonderful job. It made only one mistake with its 2005 release and corrected in the 2007 release. Codemasters has reflected the rules of the game in a near perfect manner. And in some ways, game-play is a little more difficult in Codemasters than it is in EA Sports. The only problem with Codemasters' games is their game looks like a little cartoonic, even though the graphics are excellent.
You have no idea how many times I have edited this continuously dropping my ratings of this game. This is because, as I play it more, I see more errors in the game. I have promised myself never again to spend a dime on EA Sports Cricket games again. To me, the game-maker is a disgrace to Cricket, and that is personal for me because Cricket is my favorite sport. I would buy Codemasters' Cricket games. They know how to make an error-free, and more importantly, they know how the Cricket is played. And by the way, the all-talked-about "Century Stick System" is nothing too fancy, and does not make the 2007 version better than the 2005 one. This makes one wonder what EA Sports accomplished with Cricket '07. I'll give you the answer, if you have not figured out already - "NOTHING." Let me close with this phrase - Trust Codemasters with Cricket!
