Yes, that's right!
For those of you who have never heard of E. W. Hornung; he was the brother-in-law of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. From what I've read, he initially wrote Raffles as a spoof of his famous brother-in-law's creation; which became wildly popular in England and America during and after the Victorian period. These stories are quite a lark and I would say they are very recommended, if not required, reading for every Sherlock Holmes fan. There was also a BBC television series, staring Anthony Valentine, put out by Yorkshire Television in 1977 that was available on DVD until about a year or so ago, but is currently out of production. It was a 2 season, 4 DVD set (The First Step and To Catch a Thief) put out by Granada BFS Video which did not follow the stories exactly but was still, a very enjoyable series to watch. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I have. Such a pity that Mr. A. J. Raffles is no longer as well known as his famous counter-part. |
