Book Description

November 30, 2006 My Penguin
Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders through the slums of St Petersburg and commits a random murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be a great man, a Napoleon: acting for a higher purpose beyond conventional moral law. But as he embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov is pursued by the growing voice of his conscience and finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck. Only Sonya, a downtrodden prostitute, can offer the chance of redemption.

About the Author

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow in 1821, the 2nd of 7 children. From 1849 to 1854 he lived in a convict prison, and in later years his passion for gambling led him deeply into debt. In 1880 he delivered his famous address at theunveiling of Pushkin's memorial in Moscow; he died six months later in 1881. David McDuff has translated a number of nineteenth-century Russian prose works for the Penguin Classics series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Work of Art, January 20, 2012
This is a true masterpiece. The intensity of the psychological ordeals of the main character Raskolnikov is unrelenting. A fascinating insight into the tenement life of Saint Petersburg. This book has remained a firm favourite! The Penguin Classics version is, as usual, a quality production.

5.0 out of 5 stars it may be long but what a story, October 31, 2011
I first read this about 20 years ago but didn't really appreciate it until now. It takes a while to get through but the story of Raskolnikov stays with one. I even started dreaming I was in that apartment. "`Oh God, how loathsome it all is! and can I, can I possibly....No, it's nonsense, it's rubbish!' he added resolutely. `And how could such an atrocious thing come into my head? What filthy things my heart is capable of.'" Indeed...
