WONDERFUL book -- especially for home-schoolers!,

I used this book in home-schooling my god-daughter at the eighth grade level. She LOVED every minute in this book, and it was a great incentive for "Finish your other work first!"
The editorial review is accurate in every way. The more advanced labs were easily adaptable, and were a good motivation to achieve "advanced level" labs. Classroom teachers will find this to be a terrific resource -- and an outstanding source for substitute teachers' lesson plans. Imagine: a substitute teacher who actually TEACHES something in your absence! (Careful though, the kids might not want you back...)

Great Book,
This review is from: Crime Scene Investigations: Real-Life Science Labs For Grades 6-12 (Paperback)
I really enjoyed using this book with my students. The kids really got into the activities. Works well with mixed grouping of students. If you have younger students there is another book, and it is good also.

Great Info - Terrible layout,

The book is great, and with very useful information. However, I have a class of 20 students of whom I purchased books for a high school Forensics class, and after receiving the books, I realized that the answers are within the text. This would be OK (maybe) if the answers were on a separate page that I could have removed from the books, but instead, the answers are intermingled with important information. I purchased labels to cover up all of the answers within each book. This was not the best solution, and I wish there was either a separate answer key, or the answers were in the back of each book. I found out that some of the students removed the labels. I wish I would have realized this before my purchase, as I may have had to search for another book. This too, would have been unfortunate, as the class would have missed out on some great experiments.

As a Forensics teacher I had great difficulty finding resources for doable labs in the classroom. This is one of the few lesson plan books available for this subject. A majority of the labs in this book are on the lower end of the 6-12 grade range and focus on activities that can be done with a minimum of materials. Some of the activities are quite impressive - including how to make a mummy, urinalysis (not with real urine), and chromatography. I love the way the table of contents lists subject tie-ins with general science; makes it very easy to relate your lesson plans to required curriculums. The only problem I've encountered with this book is the necessity of adapting the labs to older high school students rather than just copying and handing out the worksheets; occasionally the way they present the labs is too young for my students.

Reading and Math Teachers,
By
This review is from: Crime Scene Investigations: Real-Life Science Labs For Grades 6-12 (Paperback)
I am the math teacher but I am partnering with a reading teacher to co-teach the lessons in this book. We have already completed the handwriting lab and the logic lab with a dead boyfriend. This lab was very engaging to my "player" boys in junior high and they they had to figure out which of the 6 girlfriends killed the boyfriend. Lots of fun!
The next lab we are doing is a self-generated lab involving fingerprints. We read through the lab and didn't like the story so we are inspired to write our own, once again because of the book. Personally, I love this book and am ordering my own copy of it. It promotes reading because the students read the lab and find the answers. All we do is monitor the kids and it is lots of fun to see who they think committed the crime. Great book!

Fully developed lesson plans for 6th-12th graders on various aspects of forensic science. Requires some gathering of materials, all easily obtainable, but not necessarily household items. Requires some prep on the part of the teacher, but not excessive prep work. Includes activities that can be completed in one day, and activities that involve observation over a time span of days or weeks. There is an elementary school edition for younger children. I wish it were still offered in the original spiral binding, though.
High quality addition to traditional science curriculum or good as a stand-alone special course.

This book has a lot great activities in it. The title says for grades 6-12, but I would say most of the activities are appropriate for 6-8 as is. You can definitley modify them and build upon them to make them suitable for grades 9-12. Would recommend to anyone who teaches forensic science or is looking for a way to incorporate forensic science into other science subjects.

I teach a ton of forensics in my high school science classes and wasn't sure if this book would provide me with new ideas, but it did. I ordered this at the end of the school year and was able to use some of the activities to keep the kids occupied during the last days before exams. The activities I have used so far are super easy to use and kept the kids really engaged.

I teach science and find this book great for forensic science experiments. Kids love it. I lost this book and had to get another one because I can't teach without it.

Book is filled with easy to do and fun labs for middle school students. Labs also inform students on forensic facts and vary for teachers who may or may not have much science lab equipment. Labs and Worksheets are easy to run off for student use.Crime Scene Investigations: Real-Life Science for Grades 6-12
