This is the best of the series - and from the 'preview' at the end for the next installment, it just keeps getting better. Ms. Laurie is hitting her stride, and it's been a lot of fun to see!
Her character, Abby Cooper, is a psychic around the Detroit area, and she has this gorgeous hunk of a boyfriend Dutch, who is FBI - Abby is recuperating from her gunshot wound at Dutch's house - She is upset her 'Crew' (her guides on the Other Side who help her psychically) didn't warn her that she was going to be shot. She shuts down and temporarily stops her career - But in a great move, Dutch asks for her help in some cases he is working on - That is a huge move for Dutch - at first he was skeptical - Great to see him progress as well - Abby goes undercover to find clues to unravel Dutch's case - dangerous work - and exciting! This entry is a wonderful progression of characters - every one of them including pets! You can tell Ms. Laurie is a pet lover - and that is a big plus in my book. One of the things I like about this series is that Ms. Laurie shows us the process a psychic takes to get 'in the zone' - it is fascinating! It accurately depicts the psychic experience - Ms. Laurie is a gifted psychic and her website is great - Her writing style is smooth and reading it is like being next to her and hearing her telling you this story - If you are a mystery fan, metaphysical fan, etc. this is a great addition to your collection - Keep 'em coming, Victoria!

You gotta love Abby,

Abby is back on her feet after(stop here if you haven't read Killer Insight) being shot. But she is still a little unsure at times if she wants to go back to work, but Dutch convinces her to do so. For the past 3 months she;s lived with him and things are going smoothly with them. Like always Abby has agreed to assist Dutch on some cold cases. One of which connects to murder of Milo's old partner. Furthermore Candice moves her new PI business into Abby's suite and together they take on a case that is going to lead to big trouble. Candice is convinced that the man who murdered Milo's old partner is innocent and that there is some shady business surrounding the whole case since the man is up for parole. Danger follows Abby and Candice on the case like an unwanted shadow. At every turn comes a dangerous obstacle.
I don't want to give away too much of the excitment so all I can say is a LOT of good stuff happens that will have you gripping the spine. It all leads up to a charming surprise at the end which I was able to guess at based on two subtle hints that are dropped into the conversations, so pay close attention and you might be able to guess it too!! Overall a wonderful read and looking forward to next year's Death Perception, at least during the wait there's Demons are a Ghoul's Best Friend.

Sweethot - You gotta love Dutch,

Book #5 in the Psychic Eye Mystery. I actually liked this one better than the last - Killer Insight. As Abby recovers from her gunshot wounds in the last book she has moved into Dutchs' home much to the chigrin of Virgil the cat. As she forces herself to move on and challenge the post tramatic stress of her last case, Abby and Candice team up together to work on a new investigation which runs smack dab into an adventure that even Dutch has a hard time getting her out of.

These books have a clever premise, and I have read them all. This one bored me a lot, I must admit. I don't want to give anything away. I will say that the interesting features were pretty absent: her psychic abilities and her relationship with Dutch. (I'm not big on romantic mysteries, but their relationship had some interesting aspects that contributed to the stories in the early books.) I understand Abby's hesitancy to jump back in the saddle after her gunshot, but taking on an undercover assignment as a type of favor to a woman who really owes Abby the favor for renting part of her office made no sense. The craziness involved in the assignment and lying to Dutch was all very hard to buy. Abby is supposed to be a smart woman; why do the silly stuff? Why lie to Dutch after almost getting killled? This one didn't do it for me. Abby seemed less mature and not very confident. Much more so than seemed to make sense---even after he injury. I couldn't write one of these, and I applaud Ms. Laurie. I am not comfortable saying unkind things; My hats off to fiction writers. Still doesn't mean I don't expect to be more fully entertained. This one was a yawn for me, but do give it a try. See for yourself. If you are unfamiliar with the series, begin at the beginning. I plan to come back and see what Abby is up to myself, at least one more time.

Not The Best In The Series,
This review is from: Crime Seen (Psychic Eye Mysteries, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
While I enjoy this series, this installment was definitely not the best one in the series.
While I was glad not to have the annoying Cat in this book, I was irritated by Abby's constant references to "my boyfriend" in practically every paragraph. It made her seem weak and dependent and not at all the strong lead she's been in previous books. The ending only added to that feeling. I'll read the next installment, but hope we're not in for a series of Abby and "my boyfriend" from here on out.

Seemlessly flowing from the previous series installment, we pick up with Abby recovering from her wound and struggling with her confidence. I liked the addition of a sidekick for Abby, Candice the PI. Other well loved characters remain: Dave, Milo, Theresa, and of course, Eggy! The intricate plotting around the mortgage company showed a lot of research and how things can be manipulated. Instead of buying a puppy, I wish they had rescued a dachshund! Can't wait for the next installment.

This book begins where the last one (Killer Insight) left off a year ago, and I wish that we hadn't had to wait a whole year to continue with Abby's sagas! I have enjoyed the Abby series - as have my twenty-something daughters - which says alot!
It is so comfortable to be able to pick up a book and know the history of the characters. The book caught my attention from the start, and I had trouble putting it down. I really enjoy series and this book is one of Victoria's best yet. I love reading the Abby stories because Victoria nails the 3 things I enjoy most: a captivating mystery, funny situations that make me laugh, and a little romance thrown in for good measure. I really get involved feeling Abby's thoughts and her crew's messages. I enjoy learning about the process psychics mentally go through, and their personal conflicts. You would think that psychics would have it made, but Abby shows us it's not true! Even better, this series is written by a psychic herself, Victoria Laurie, and if you haven't had her do a phone reading, you are really missing out!

This is yet another great mystery starring Abby Cooper, the psychic detective. This time she's a bit hesitant to get back in the saddle after being shot 3 months earlier, but she does it, and comes back just as strong as before. I love reading these mysteries. They are great! Keep up the writing Victoria Laurie!

clever whodunit,
This review is from: Crime Seen (Psychic Eye Mysteries, Book 5) (Mass Market Paperback)
In Royal Oak, Michigan Abby Cooper has physically recovered from almost dying from a gunshot wound, but mentally remains despondent as her psychic skills failed her. She remains in the house of her FBI Agent boyfriend Dutch Rivers and has not returned to work doing readings as she suffers from post traumatic stress syndrome. Private Investigator Candace calls to rent space from Abby while Dutch asks her to read three cases that have stymied him. Dutch's former partner police detective Milo mentions the parole hearing of Lutz; convicted nine years ago of killing his first partner Walter McDaniel.
Abby with the help of her crew of five spirits "reads" the first file. She next picks up a second case, but realizes she accidentally grabbed the Lutz file. She says nothing about Lutz to Dutch. Abby barters with Candace: four months no rent in exchange for helping her investigate the Lutz case because she feels he is not the killer although he confessed. Candace learns that a PI on the case Darren Cox quit to become a loan officer at Universal Mortgage, owned by Wolfe, who Abby knows was at the McDaniel crime scene. Candace arranges for Abby to meet Cox so that she can go undercover as a loan officer at Universal. The fifth Psychic Eye mystery is a clever whodunit that focuses on a more humanly foible than before Abby as she struggles to return to readings having failed to "see" the attempt on her life. Her undercover work upsets Dutch who knows she is up to something especially when he sees her hiding her face in the lap of another man, but trusts her to believe she is not cheating on him. Once again enhanced by Candace Abby's psychic skills seem real although skeptical readers will question how easily strangers accept her "gift" without any doubt or scorn. Fans will enjoy Abby's return to what she does best. Harriet Klausner |
