Editorial Reviews

Set in 1963, Crime Story is the story of the Chicago Police Major Crime Unit headed by tough-as-nails Lieutenant Mike Torello (Dennis Farina, Get Shorty) and his obsessive pursuit of slick and ruthless gangster Ray Luca (Anthony Denison, The Closer), one of organized crime’s brightest young hoods. As Luca murders, steals, and extorts his way to the top from the mean streets of Chicago to the glitter of Las Vegas, Torello remains hot on his trail. From Michael Mann (Miami Vice, Heat) comes Crime Story, one of the most influential action dramas in television history. Featuring a stellar supporting cast that includes Stephen Lang, Bill Campbell, Ted Levine, Darlanne Fluegel and Joseph Wiseman. Guest stars include David Caruso, Julia Roberts, Gary Sinise, Kevin Spacey, Ving Rhames, Lorraine Bracco, Michael Madsen, Pam Grier, Steven Weber, Laura San Giacomo, Stanley Tucci, David Hyde Pierce, Andrew Dice Clay, Deborah Harry, and more. This special collection includes the two hour pilot and both seasons from the cult classic television series.

Episodes: Pilot, Final Transmission, Shadow Dancer, The Saint Louis Book of Blues, The War, Abrams for the Defense, Pursuit of a Wanted Felon, Old Friends Dead Ends, Justice Hits the Skids, For Love or Money, Crime Pays, Hide and Go Thief, Strange Bedfellows, Fatal Crossroads, Torello on Trial, Kingdom of Money, The Battle of Las Vegas, The Survivor, The Pinnacle, Top of the World, Ground Zero, The Senator the Movie Star and the Mob, Blast from the Past, Always a Blonde, Atomic Fallout, Shockwaves, Robbery Armed, Little Girl Lost, Love Hurts, MIG-21, Moulin Rouge, Seize the Time, Femme Fatale, Protected Witness, Last Rites, Pauli Taglia's Dream, Roadrunner, The Brothel Wars, Byline, The Hearings, Pursuit, Escape, Going Home

One of the best shows to ever hit the TV screen.

Good, liked it the first time it aired, one show out of order, three shows left to watch, don't remember the ending, it should be a surprise.

SEASON ONE: The picture and sound quality of CRIME STORY--THE 25th ANNIVERSARY edition is GREAT.

5 Stars: Series
2 Stars: Presentation

In 1986, Michael Mann (with creators Chuck Adamson and Gustave Reininger) brought a very unusual cop show to primetime network television. A period piece set in 1963, "Crime Story" was an ambitious and lavishly produced spectacle about mobster era Chicago. At its heart, it was a tale of an obsessive police lieutenant Mike Torello (Dennis Farina) and his dogged pursuit of rising crime lord Ray Luca (Anthony Denison). Torello and his team tracked the ruthless criminal exploits of the ever more dangerous and influential Luca in one of TV's most satisfying games of cat and mouse. While never a particular ratings blockbuster, the show maintained a small but faithful audience who followed the action to Las Vegas for a second season. In my opinion, neither Farina or Denison would be so perfectly cast again--both really excelled. The show itself was very impressive on the technical side (costumes, sets, props, cinematography, lighting) and really felt different than anything else on the air. The show has probably received more respect as a cult legend in the years since as those who worked on it went on to different and more visible projects. I firmly maintain that if the show had been created in today's marketplace, it would have found its home on HBO or AMC and been fostered with love.

Previous DVD releases have been unkind to "Crime Story," and there seems to be two major issues in question for this release. First of all, as the 25 year anniversary edition, this set includes the 21 episodes of Season One (including the two hour pilot) and the 22 episodes of Season Two sold together for the first time.

SEASON ONE: The picture and sound quality of CRIME STORY--THE 25th ANNIVERSARY edition is GREAT. I have no idea if Image Entertainment did any remastering, but the picture looks the SAME to my eyes as the original broadcast on NBC--in other words--it looks **FINE**--I have no complaints. SEASON TWO: As other reviewers have mentioned, many of the Season Two episodes (unfortunately) have noticable digital artifacts--the picture definitely isn't as clear as the original broadcast, but it's good enough. Also, it **APPEARS** that this DVD set features ALL(?)...or at least MOST of the ORIGINAL MUSIC--I viewed all of the episodes in this set and virtually every episode features 1960's music--PERFORMED BY THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS--there are no "covers" or replacement songs as far as I can determine (and I am by no means an expert on either vintage music or the CRIME STORY series). Also, this DVD edition features Chapter Stops--something that the previous versions released by Anchor Bay didn't have. There is **ONE ERROR** though--the Season 2 episodes "Byline" (on disc #9) and "The Hearings" (on disc #8) are presented in REVERSE ORDER (view "Byline" FIRST and THEN view "The Hearings"). To sum up, CRIME STORY--THE 25th ANNIVERSARY EDITION is a **HUGE** improvement over the Anchor Bay editions--and the price (currently $19.99) is a steal! This DVD set is an AWESOME viewing experience--don't hesitate to order it!

As many others have stated, this is a great show that deserves a better presentation. I own hundreds of DVDs including many other "budget" TV sets that put too many episodes per disc so I wasn't expecting the picture quality to be great. After watching the first 10 episodes, I can say that this release has the worst video quality of any official DVD release I own. The picture is VERY grainy, the blacks are gray and the colors are faded and washed out. It looks like they transferred these from VHS tapes recorded on SLP. IF YOU'RE PICKY ABOUT PICTURE QUALITY, DON'T BUY THIS SET! This show deserves better.

The order of the season two episodes on these discs is incorrect. The web sites imdb.com and tv.com and sidereel.com all agree on the order of these episodes. The correct episode numbers for each disc are as follows, with season two starting with the third episode on disc five:

disc1 -- 01 -- 02 -- 03 -- 04
disc2 -- 05 -- 06 -- 07 -- 08 -- 09
disc3 -- 10 -- 11 -- 12 -- 13 -- 14
disc4 -- 15 -- 16 -- 17 -- 18 -- 19
disc5 -- 20 -- 21 -- 01 -- 02 -- 04
disc6 -- 03 -- 05 -- 06 -- 08 -- 07
disc7 -- 09 -- 15 -- 12 -- 10 -- 11
disc8 -- 16 -- 13 -- 14 -- 17 -- 19
disc9 -- 18 -- 20 -- 21 -- 22

Given that the season two episodes are wildly out of order, would you say that means this product is defective?

Yes, the quality leaves much to be desired. There were no upgrades or digitizing done to the original tv series, but that adds a little "texture" to this gritty show. Cuts between scenes, where the commercials were, are crude and should have been eliminated altogether to make each show smooth, but nothing is really lost, just choppy.

My two biggest complaints: there are no subtitles and no extras. When you buy a boxed set, especially an "Anniversary" edition, you hope you will at least get some interviews and commentary, nope, zip, zero, just the episodes and nothing else. There's no booklet, no episode guide, no additional info at all.

Such a rich series deserves more--c'mon Michael Mann! You can see how Mann's technique progresses through the series, how "Miami Vice-like" it starts to become. Would have been nice to hear his comments, as well as interviews with Farina and Dennison, et. al. And the guest stars! Gary Sinise, Deborah Harry ("Blondie"), David Caruso, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey!!!

Bottom line: Great Series, great DVD to have if you loved this show, it's just sad that it wasn't given the proper treatment it deserves.
