Not a Phish album but an album with Phish on it - Good music,
By A Customer
This review is from: Crimes of the Mind (Audio CD)
I think the expectation of everyone when buying this album was that they were getting a Phish album. It is not a Phish album. It doesn't have the jams and great instrumentals fans are used to in Phish albums. It is an album of catchy sounds and funny lyrics. I hated it when I first bought it because I expected Phish. But after getting over that expectation and simply listening to the album for what it was, I really started to enjoy it. It is definetely one of those albums that grow on you more and more as you listen to it. I've only given it three stars because, having just bought the new album (Under the Sound Umbrella)and already submitting a review (I gave it 4 stars), I couldn't give this album a better rating. "Under the Sound Umbrella" is a much better album. If you buy this album thinking you're buying Phish, you'll be disappointed. But if you're not buying it under that presumption, grab it.

Leave all ego's out the door please.,

This is an egoless, old friends getting together and having a good time album. Then you have the cynical folks who say, "this is not Phish, how can I listen to anything else besides Phish." "I don't like his voice, the lyrics have nothing to offer." People just need to realize that they have no say on what a band should write, sing or play. This is a funny album, lighten up and relax. Please do not over analize this album, it's just a simple straight to the point album. The lyrics are simple, but who cares, they make me laugh and that's all that really matters. All the songs have the same tempo, the structures are similar, and some of the songs have that, "guitar hero" solo sound. Plus the lyrics are amusing, except Tv Show, it's depressing, because situations like that sometimes cross your mind and do occur. Well, at any rate, this is a good album and try not to listen to that guy from Kentucky.

not like phish, but great anyway,

Ok, this may not be phish, but it's still an awesome album. The lyrics are awesome and the songs are almost ska-like. so don't listen to those who are so totally obsessed with phish that they put down anything with phish's name on it that doesn't sound exactly like them. give it a chance

Certainly not their best...,

Trying to think of how to review this CD... relatively speaking, this is the worst *Phish* album that has come out... I don't like the Dude's singing, the lyrics are downright stupid (I don't mind all silly lyrics... Phish often uses them in very unique, creative ways to express a point in a fresh manner... but these are just pointless...)Regardless, I'm listening to it in the car, trying to imagine how I would feel if this was a new band, someone besides Phish, and this was the first that I had heard of them... and I thought, it's still pretty good on an absolute basis, it only really *sucks* compared to other Phish discs... Lesson being... if you're a Phish phreak, buy it... you'll like it, not as much as the other albums, but it's worth the cash... if you're just getting into the band, or only kinda like them, buy "Rift", "Junta" (my two faves), or any of the others... But on its own merits, it's still worth 3 1/2 - 4 stars...

We have confirmed the fact that this is not Phish!,

Ok, all you phrantic phish phans, we all know this is NOT a Phish album. So, all that aside, let's start actually reviewing the album instead of giving it 1 star simply because it's not a Phish album. Imagine, if you will, if Wesley Willis had ever made a more serious/thoughtful album, yet maintained his goofiness. Eh? Sounds kinda dumb. But this is not. This is a good album, and the music IS made by Phish, so techincally the music is pretty dern solid. I like it.

tries to be funny but doesn't really work,

Without even approaching this as a Phish album, it's still not very good; The Dude of Life tries to make funny lyrics but it comes off as merely pretentious or merely idiotic; a couple somewhat brighter points (Ordinary Day has better instrumental than the rest of it, and TV Show's vocals are the best on the album) still don't make the album worth much at all.

I dont listen to alot of straight rock music unless its old as i mostly listen to metal but ive had this for years and every time it gets lost I have to find one to replace it . I really love it most people i know are indifferent to it but I think it's a classic P.S. Im not a phish fan really ,so dont be dissuaded by Phish being in the title

The Dude abides....,

Go into this expecting a comedic album and you'll like it. No, it's not like the rest of Phish's repertoire (as has been pointed out in 100 other reviews) but who cares? There's some pretty funny stuff on here, like "Bitchin' Again."

i could have made a better album by recording myself playing harmonica while farting. if you want to listen to good music that has some humour/a unique sound go get a some zappa albums or maybe some primus, if you want to be a faux 'hippy' then stick to phish and their mindless work with artists like "dude of life." this album really has nothing positive to offer, i've tried so hard to like this album for almost 2 years now and couldn't bring myself to take a liking to even one song. it's hard to believe that a band that's recorded such landmark albums as junta could disgrace themselves by recording this cd. a definite DO NOT BUY.
