Stephanie Johnson's debut novel "Crimes of Neglect" is an enjoyable read, albeit perhaps suffering from first-novel syndrome. It's compelling enough, especially as the seemingly-haphazard structure of events past and present begin to cohere, but I think it tries a little too hard to shock. The language is simple, which is probably why the in-your-face images (eg. after abortion, alcoholism) seem anything but subtle. I find it an interesting read, as the narrator is an atypical heroine - Bea is the closest thing to pure white ... I have come across in a novel, whilst still able to be sympathised with. "Crimes of Neglect" isn't essential reading, but it's not disappointing either. It succeeds in presenting characters we can recognise and/or identify with.
