2.0 out of 5 stars On the Disappointing Side, September 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Criminal Law (1988 Film) (Audio CD)
As a Numero Uno Jerry Goldsmith fanatic, I was substantially disappointed with this versatile composer's effort for the film CRIMINAL LAW. While he went on to enjoy greater successes with similarly-themed films, such as BASIC INSTINCT, this is one score that sounds like Goldsmith wrote it in his sleep--while in the clutches of a deep fever. Entirely synthesized, the score has no underpinning humanity, save for a few fleeting piano motifs which are far between. Goldsmith also borrows from himself here--there are motifs straight out of LEVIATHAN, a film released in the same year as CRIMINAL LAW, which the composer doesn't even try to cover up. The bottom line: this is a poorly integrated score which doesn't stand by itself at all. Given the capabilities of the artist, it's a disappointment.

I am a Goldsmith fanatic as well, and I have to say, this is a particular favorite of mine. It is a decidedly melencholy score, and takes some getting used to. Not all the tracks stand out for me, but several I consider to be quite brilliant. It is an unusual departure for Goldsmith (in my opinion) and requires several listenings to really adjust to. Whenever I get a new soundtrack CD, I give it some time to "sink in" - because sometimes my first impression is premature, and incorrect. (For instance, I hated "Planet of the Apes" and "The Omen" when I first heard them, now I consider them to be among the best Goldsmith scores ever!) So, I took my time with "Criminal Law", and am glad I did. It definitely grew on me.

You may not find that every track is to your liking. But it is a moving, off-center, melencholy score, and worth having if you are a serious Goldsmith fan
