This text stresses the practical procedures, techniques, and applications of private and public investigations to provide students with a solid foundation in criminal investigation. The Seventh Edition emphasizes professionalism and integrates coverage of modern investigation tools as it presents established investigation policies, procedures, and techniques for the law enforcement officer. Recent court cases; coverage of the latest investigative techniques and technology; and new material on topics such as terrorism, stalking, and child abuse enhance the text's practical and applied approach. In addition, a new 8-page, full color crime scenes photos insert uses current, real-life cases to illustrate chapter topics, and a new interactive Crime and Evidence in Action CD-ROM comes packaged with each student edition.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I believe the book is excellent and meets the needs of my courses and their curricula."

"As this text has grown from its original edition, it has developed and kept abreast of the latest innovations in technology, police techniques, procedures, and operations…There is a smooth flow of information that is never overbearing or difficult to understand."

"The three greatest strengths of this book are ease of use, the comprehensive nature of the chapters, and the timeliness of the information."

"An investigative cookbook. The authors show the investigator what to look for, how to process it, and how to handle it all the way through the complexities of the criminal justice system, from crime scene to courtroom."

"The section on testifying in court is extremely valuable…The advice on presentation and demeanor are great. This chapter is one more reason (of many) why students should not sell back this book, but rather keep it as a reference throughout their law enforcement careers." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reads with ease. Topical. Relevant. Comprehensive., March 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Criminal Investigation (Hardcover)
I read this book as part of a university level criminal investigations class for criminal justice professionals, the book being the personal choice of my professor whom himself had over 25 years federal and local law enforcement experience as an investigator. The book read absolutely seemlessly. Chapters were brimming with topical, relevant facts. And the chapters went into sufficient detail for the book to serve as either a solid basis for the criminal justice novice or as a reference for the more advanced professional who may not have the on-the-job exposure to all aspects of criminal investigation. While covering strictly forensic topics it did not cross the line from providing information relevant to an on-scene investigator to that which would only be relevant to a forensic technician, always keeping the material and topics relevant to patrol and investigative law enforcement officers, not forensic technicians. This is not a forensics textbook. This is an investigations handbook. Total hands on. Makes you think. Aids in planning. If anything, the book was brimming from cover to cover to the point that it could very well have gone on in volume after volume. A good starting point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Criminal Investigators this is a must have in your library!, April 7, 2004
This review is from: Criminal Investigation (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac) (Hardcover)
This book is a must have for those interested in criminal investigations. It is up with the current technological advances and guides you through various information essential to criminal investigations. This book can be used by both public and private sector. As a police officer for the City of Philadelphia it is a must-read for those aspiring to be a detective in regard to the promotional exams. I did like the free InfoTrac College edition and hope that they can be included in subsequent editions, I found it very helpful in terms of research material. The book even covered many-real life examples and Terrorist-related challenges that all involved in law enforecement should be knowledgeable of. I would recommend this book to other officers, and even to lawyers. There is a study guide, ISBN # 0-534-61525-2, order them both today.
