I used this book for a class at a university. It was the required text book and served me well toward getting an A. For a foundational book, there's nothing wrong with it. The only problem with it was that I could not resell it at the end of the semester because they considered it to be "outdated" at that time.

Criminal Justice in America (5th edition) proposes a clear view of the criminal justice system. The book is filled with up to date information including the citation of rulings from the Robert's court in 2006. Cole & Smith greatly sum up topics that can easily have and do have books of their own. Some little things that make a great addition to the book is review questions and answers seen throughout the chapter as well as special little sections in which they talk about specific careers in the criminal justice system. As far as the previous reviewers that claim this book to be racist, they must have only read the first section dealing with "is the criminal justice system racist?"

The image was incorrect for the book as this shows the 7th addition when you are actually sold the 6th. Product is in okay condition. Seller is difficult to work with and fails to understand return circumstances.

Coming back to school as an adult student pursuing a second degree, I found the information in this book to be rather enlightening. I'll admit that I didn't know the difference between a jail and a prison or that there is a cyber action team.

While some people complain that this book is racist, I don't believe it is. It does point out that there is a rather large portion of minorities in prison, that disparity does exist. It goes further on to explain that there are three different thought groups in regards to this disparity, not necessarily promoting any of these theories as being correct. Read P. 24-28 for reference.

Really the only flaws that I can find with this book are: 1. A map of Norway when the breakout box was talking about another country 2. A double word typo.

Overall it was an informative book and I only wish that there was an interactive CD or a digital version of the book for quicker cross referencing.

This textbook is very shallow and there is a lot of misleading information in it. If you are looking for a good textbook for an introductory class, I would encourage you to look elsewhere.
