3.0 out of 5 stars A very basic primer on practicing criminal psych
When I bought this book, I thought I would be getting a basic breakdown of different types of offender behavior and the more prevalent psychiatric issues that one would see in the criminal psych field, with occasional views of how a variety of socio-economic factors influence the different types of crinimal behavior in the US. This review is from: Criminal Psychology: A Beginner's Guide (Beginners Guide (Oneworld)) (Paperback)
When I bought this book, I thought I would be getting a basic breakdown of different types of offender behavior and the more prevalent psychiatric issues that one would see in the criminal psych field, with occasional views of how a variety of socio-economic factors influence the different types of crinimal behavior in the US. That's not the main purpose of this book. This book is primarily written for a UK audience (with brief references in every segment on how the subject is studied or researched in the US). The main purpose is to look at the many different types of work that criminal psychologists do and the environments in which they work; this book does a very good job of examining that. For those looking to enter into the criminal psych field, this would be very helpful. There are some portions that do look at offender behavior, but they are mostly high-level macro views of offender behavior without any in-depth examinations of "what makes the offender tick" (more along the lines of "what types of punishment are out there? Why? Do they really work?"). If you're looking for a book that's more focused on the psychology of offender behavior, this is not the best book for you.
