Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The fourth adventure for San Francisco-based phobia therapist Quinn Parker begins at Pebble Beach, where Quinn is caddying for his old high school buddy, golf pro Brad Helfan, who has received a badly misspelled death threat. Brad, a relative unknown who is tied for the lead of the U.S. Open, insists that the police not be called. After he is brutally murdered on the course the next day, Quinn investigates with the help of his sidekick, aspiring comedian, Hank Wilkie, and without the help of police. Quinn learns that Brad, who had hustled golf, gambled and been deep in debt, had called his ex-wife the night before his death to say something important was coming in the mail. The supporting cast includes a zesty assortment of hustlers, gangsters, thugs and a boxer, plus Quinn's straightforward love interest, Kate, who returns from Blood Under the Bridge. Zimmerman, more adept at action scenes, especially fistfights, than characterization, provides enough male bonding here for a series of beer commercials.

From Booklist

Brad Helfan, struggling pro golfer, is walking up the eighteenth fairway at the Pebble Beach Golf Club, three shots away from winning the U.S. Open and becoming the Cinderella story of the decade. Then rifle shots ring out, and Cinderella is turned into a grotesquely bloody pumpkin. Standing numbly beside the body is Helfan's caddy, high-school pal Quinn Parker, the hero of three previous mysteries, most recently Full-Bodied Red. Parker, whose peculiar career as a San Francisco "phobia therapist" seems to involve him in more than his share of murders, attempts to solve the crime. Helfan, it turns out, had received death threats during the tournament and is in trouble with gamblers in Las Vegas and Palm Springs. What follows is a mostly routine investigation--the killer is painfully easy to spot, even for those mystery fans with only marginal interest in whodunit--but the golf setting proves particularly hospitable to the genre, combining the smarminess of the country-club set with the sleaziness of the golf hustler. This is the book Michael Jordan should have read before he agreed to double his bets. Bill Ott

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to feel part of the lives of the characters, November 26, 1998
I keep looking for more books by Mr. Zimmerman. I found all four of them by accident when I started looking at the "Z" authors at my library. I was hooked immediately, I especially like that he included golf in one of his mysteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable with a fascinating and interesting plot, July 12, 1998
By A Customer
I have read several of Bruce Zimmerman's books and find them to be very easy to get absorbed into the plot. The author is knowledgeable on the subject of each of his books and the area that is portrayed in each book. I understand that he has another book out and am waiting for the opportunity to read it.

Intriging Murder Mystery found on the Golf Course, light reading with an amusing sense of humor, keeps you guessing with so many characters to suspect. Very knowledgeable of the California area and all aspects of Golf, including the U.S. Open Tornament.
