5.0 out of 5 stars Melodic, gloomy heavy metal masterpiece
Easily my favorite Sentenced album ever. I own all of them from Shadow of the Past to Amok to Crimson. If you liked the previous 3 Sentenced albums, you'll love this one. More experimenting with vocal harmonies and tighter songs make this an instant classic. 11 truly great metal songs. If you're not a Sentenced fan, buy this! You will!

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely cool and hummable goth metal rocker, June 11, 2001

This is one of those albums that you kind of have to make yourself sit through in one listen, fighting the urge to maybe turn it off and put on something a bit happier. DON'T DO IT! Keep listening, and I guarantee that by the end of the disc, you'll hit 'repeat' and want to do it all over again. This is also one of those discs that I'd bet a dollar just keeps getting better with age, not unlike Paradise Lost's 'Draconian Times,' which another reviewer pointed out as a comparison to this.

Yes, it falls into a similar vein as Paradise Lost, dark, moody, unbelievably catchy and rhythmic hooks, somber lyrics and a depressed haunted atmosphere. But god damn this is a good rock album. I really hesitate to classify this as metal, because it's not really. Sure loud, driving guitars and metallic melodies permeate the whole record, but this just ain't metal. It's damn good though. One of the other reviewers also hit the nail on the head by stating tracks 4-7 were the golden nugget at the epicenter of this delicious gem of a disc; "Broken," "Killing Me, Killing You," (my fave on the album) "Dead Moon Rising" and "No More Beating as One" are all very strong songs. Throw in the opener, "Bleed in My Arms" and the gorgeous, lilting "The River," and you've got a memorable album with hooks that sing their teeth in you and won't let go.

I could see many, many different types of musical taste getting into this album. If you're a fan of melody and good music, you really ought to give this a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite but it is Sentenced's best., November 19, 2004
This review is from: Crimson (Audio CD)
I'll say for the record that TCWL is my favorite Sentenced album, but there are some earth shattering songs that belong to Crimson. Songs like Fragile, No More Beating As One, Broken, Killing Me Killing You, and Dead Moon Rising make this album an absolut melancholich classic. In my opinion Broken just steals the show on this album with one of the best guitar peices I've ever heard; catchy as hell and heavy enough to satisfy any metal fan. Coming in a close second is Fragile, probobly one of the sadder Sentenced songs out there. Just a big bring down no way you can smile after hearing this song.

In the long run Sentenced's "Crimson" is a definite must for any fan of gothy melancholy metal. And for newer fans to Sentenced this album gives you the heaviness of "Frozen" and the depression of "The Cold White Light". Solid album through and through I give it 9/10

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Metal: Sentenced to Success, May 15, 2001
By
This review is from: Crimson (Audio CD)
More good news from Finland: Sentenced are developing their success with Crimson and take heavy metal to a higher level. You'll be blown away with almost every single track on the cd, starting with Bleed in my Arms, and finishing with My Slowing Heart.

Extremely catchy and highly memorable tunes, melodic guitar lines, angry and agressive at times riffs, incredible (though slightly Hetfield-like) vocals, all this (and this "all" can't be described, it should be heard) create an amazingly refreshing atmosphere of their latest album and make a perfect listening to those able to value heavy tunes and good music in general.

The real standouts are undoubtedly: No More Beating As One (unbelievable wall of heaviest riffs in the beginning of the track, and one of the catchiest choruses on the whole cd), Home In Despair (good lyrics and nice melody), Dead Moon Rising (one of the most original tracks, in terms of instruments), With Bitterness And Joy (the perfect both guitars and melody), Broken (a song with a unique guitar intro), and My Slowing Heart (probably, the best close-up for a metal album), and of course Killing Me Killing You (the well-known hit).

The River (a slower tune), and both One More Day and Fragile are equally listenable, and only add to the album.

The perfect metal, the perfect buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars This band keeps getting better..., June 17, 2000
This review is from: Crimson (Audio CD)
which is the best thing a band could ever do. The only reason I give this one 4 stars is because I have expectations for the next one to be even better and get the full 5 star treatment. This band has actually gotten more soulful, the melodies are getting stronger and the harmonizing is great - almost harks back to great early metal bands like Bloodrock. Not many bands are working in this territory and I give Sentenced FULL respect for putting out such an honest and real record like this. You won't be wasting your money here.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Direction: Same Commitment, September 1, 2004
This review is from: Crimson (Audio CD)
Casting off their Death-Metal Armor, SENTENCED reveals something quite surprising.
When METALLICA attempted to reinvent themselves with their 'Black Album'and despite un-ending radio play and groundbreaking record sales for a "Heavy-Metal" album, they dumped both their artistic integrity as well as their technical credibility to make more room for Lars's Ego and their off-shore bank accounts.
SENTENCED has also taken a new direction but more importantly, they've succeeded in not only maintaining their authenticity and passion but 'Crimson' is actually very listenable.
Slow, heavy, base-driven riffs open most songs that explode into a powerful, melodic chorus on such tracks as 'Dead Moon Rising', 'Fragile' and 'No More Beating As One' to the vocal meloncholy, yet musically uplifting, 'The River' and 'My Heart Is Slowing Down'.
'Crimson' should please both newcomers and die-hard fans alike. Although 'The Cold White Light' is a noble successor to 'Crimson', I think track for track, 'Crimson' stands solid and will most likely see the "light of day" or is it the "dark of night?" for a long time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great album by Sentenced, May 25, 2000

Although they haven't changed their sound much since Amok, this group keeps getting better with each new album. It sounds alot like Frozen but it seems to be a bit catchier. Although the lyrics are depressing, the catchiness of the music actually seems to be uplifting at times. I can't really point to a bad song on this album, although stand out songs are No More Beating As One, Home in Despair, and Dead Moon Rising. Definately an album to check out for any metal fan.

These guys rock! Buy it! Great music to listen to when depressed and angry. Well-crafted melodic, yet always heavy, tunes. I own all their albums and think that this one may be the best.
