Book Description

June 20, 2003
Why did the kings of college football fall from their legendary status? Written by a former Alabama walk-on, Crimson Slide—with interviews from former Alabama coaches, captains, and personalities (some of whom refused to speak to anyone else)—explores Alabama’s recent decline and suggests solutions. You’ve heard the rumors, endured speculation and desired the truth about where Alabama football has been and where it’s going. There is a long story to be told. Which SEC rival is most responsible for Alabama’s struggles? What really happened to Gene Stallings? Why did Mike DuBose, a qualified and capable coach, fail? Why did Dennis Franchione, the supposed savior, flee Tuscaloosa for College Station? Why did Mike Price get fired before coaching a single game? What must Mike Shula do to restore Alabama’s reputation and restore that Alabama swagger? As an inside-narrative, Crimson Slide transcends the sports book genre and provides a blueprint of how a proud program fell, but can rise again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sad but true, June 30, 2004

Flax really hits the Tide hard in this book. Unfortunately, he's right on. It's too bad that Bama fell from the top but at least someone took the time to write about it. A good read. The writing is good for this type of book. The passion shows. After reading other reviews on Amazon it's only fair to say that Flax is writing about football...don't compare him to Faulkner or Hemingway. He's young enough to have a chance at those two and a whole lot more before he's done. Definitely worth reading. Roll Tide!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars not real sure, July 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Crimson Slide: Why Alabama Football Fell and How It Can Climb Back to the Top (Paperback)
Flax lays so many things out there that it's hard to tell what to think about it. After this ran on Feinbaum's show and after reading it, who knows if what he says is true. It's very interesting and I can't doubt that it's possible that Stallings left Alabama angry, that DuBose was a failed powermonger, and that Price just wasn't quite cut out for Bama. Can Shula bring the team back around? Who knows, but Flax thinks he'll have to be a hard-[baller] to do it. It's going to take more than the last three coaches have done, that's for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Southern Football Culture, January 29, 2005

The South is definitely more fanatical about football than any other part of the country. This former player's passion about the topic reflects this concept. This book marks the end of the Alabama legacy during the DuBose/Franchione era.

A great preface to the upcoming Crimson Tide revival...
