Powerhouse Score,

This review is from: Crimson Tide: Music From The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
It's been used in a dozen trailers, most prominently in the ID4 trailer. And why not? Hans Zimmer created 2 of the most powerful themes in the past decade for this movie. It's so empowering that it'll fill you with confidence and defiance.
There are only 5 tracks on this CD (all horribly out of order and with incorrect titles) even though it lasts over an hour (the longest track is almost 25 minutes long). It was a bad mistake by Hollywood Records to organise the CD this way as you have to skip thru a lot of tension/filler music (this CD has plenty of exactly that) to get to the good bits. There is an extended score out there featuring an additional 10 minutes of music, it has a blue cover instead of a red one and has a correct track listing in chronological order. As follows: 1. Opening/Conflict/Alabama-9:42 2. Resurrection-9:47 3. Little Ducks-2:03 4. 1SQ (Alternate)-11:09 5. Mutiny-8:58 6. Day 12-5:44 7. Three, Two, One-1:54 8. 3:00/1SQ-16:09 9. November 2nd/2SQ-2.32 10. End Titles-7:33 Total Time 75:55 It's a more complete package but a little hard to find so you might have to make do with the commercial release. Still a great purchase and I highly recommend.

One of the best film scores ever,

Watch this movie... LOUD! Pay attention to how the musical score really carries the emotions of this film.In a day where most film score try to be subtle and hide in the background, Hans Zimmers score melds with Tony Scott's film like two lovers having foreplay continually staying on the brink of climax. But the climaxes do come, and when they do they are very satisfying. I'm a bit disappointed by some of the reviews this CD has received. Have people forgotten that this music was written to accompany a film? I hear complaints that the tracks are too long or that there is dead(?) time in the composition. Hans Zimmer certainly didn't write this score to appease an MTV audience. If you need something with constant movement and don't understand the point of the ambient parts in a piece like this, I have some really good Trance CD's I could recommend to you. If you are the kind of person who likes to listen to a score away from the film or appreciate classical orchestration in general I cannot recommend this CD enough. This is one of the best examples of Hanz Zimmer's work (and he has many great examples; also see the scores for Backdraft and Gladiator). If you call yourself a Hans Zimmer fan, you aren't until you have this CD.

Here lies another great score by Hans Zimmer in the likes of The Rock and The Peacemaker. Here, the music runs at one hour, split into only 5 tracks. The music overall is powerful and testosterone filled with a large orchestra and an all male choir. The main theme is one of Zimmer's best that perfectly represents the trials and tribulations of battle in a submarine. "Mutiny" starts out with the chorus humming along with a synths and a gently played guitar that then leads into the main theme introduced lightly and then once again in full force. "Alabama" is the longest track I have ever come across on a film score album, clocking in at almost 24 minutes! "Little Ducks" features the choir singing the traditional Navy hymn, "Eternal Father Strong to Save", which is perfectly appropriate for a film like this and sounds wonderful as well. "1SQ" is a more hard hitting action cue than the others, as "Roll Tide" comprises the main theme and the Navy hymn together. All of the tracks basically sound the same, which is why I didn't go into specific detail on each one. That would take forever, especially on "Alabama". But all in all, a great score that I think you will enjoy, especially if you are a Zimmer fan.

This is one of my favorite movie soundtracks and I have a lot of em. Especially good for driving and working out. An amazing number of movie previews use cuts from this soundtrack - listen for it at the movies. I believe this is the definitive Hans Zimmer soundtrack. Check out his other stuff too - especially The Rock, Broken Arrow, The Peacemaker, and Backdraft.

Overestimated,but still a great score,

Crimson Tide was a revolutionary score. It was the first of it`s kind and followed up by dozens and dozens of imitations in the forthcoming years after its release in 1995. It started a whole new subgenre of film music - the technique of mixing classical music and chorus with rock guitars and synthesizers. This is probably one of the greatest themes Mr. Zimmer has composed. It starts out as if it will become the Force theme from Star Wars, but then it doesn`t change. It is sounding both heroic and uplifting, especially the end credits suite (here named "Roll Tide"). In a full orchestra and chorus it bursts out as a loud, bombastic action theme perfect for a submarine war movie. This kind of themes latter became typical for Hans Zimmer,as he used similar music in both "The Rock" and "The Peacemaker". It is easy to rember, too. As Zimmer was allowed to use The London Symphony Orchestra and London Voices to perform it,it sounds great too. Then, let`s have some negative words. There are only five tracks on the CD and it runs on for 60 minutes!I sometimes like long tracks, and it is said that they are that long for best listening experience. Yes,that worked well in "The Rock",as it had plenty of good themes and the music changed a lot. But take the second track (Alabama),for example. It runs on for 24 minutes! And there are many moments when the music is nearly standing still, and you just want something to happen. The best music is buried 5 to 15 minutes into the tracks, and it is too bad you have to wait that long before hearing your favorite music. Well,I do not say that this score is bad. This is actually one of the Hans Zimmer`s greatest soundtracks ever. The music itself is very good, but it is the way it`s placed on CD that is wrong. I mean, the tracks are all too long. At least ten tracks would be better. It works well in the film, but not on CD. Crimson Tide is a modern classic among film scores, but it would be easier to accept it if the tracks were shorter. OK,if you want the best music, then the first and the last track is recommended listening. Track 2 and 4 contains some great action cues, but you have to wait a while before they appear. Well, the choice is up to you now. If you want a good theme, then there is no better Zimmer score. If you want great action cues, then "The Peacemaker" is strongly recommended. But this one is fantastic too!

Longtime Zimmer fans will love the terrific score thatblows away Basil Poledouris' score for The Hunt For Red October. Well don't get me wrong The Hunt For Red October is over all not bad. This is probably one of the greatest themes that Zimmer has done. They got The London Symphony Orchestra to perform it. If you want a good theme, there is no better soundtrack to get by Hans Zimmer. This is one fantastic CD. The track "Roll Tide", is a very bold, rousing and awesome masterpiece of music. It has plenty of cool themes. There are only five tracks on the soundtrack but it runs for over 60 minutes. I also recommend The Hunt For Red October and Gladiator.

A Very Suspensful Score,
By Robert Pollock (Durham, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crimson Tide: Music From The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
How would I know that a score about some people in a submarine would be so great? Crimson Tide is an excellent blend of electronics, orchestra, and chorus. It beats The Hunt For The Red October in suspense music but it has a little bit of trouble competing with its excellent theme. The theme played mainly by french horn and chorus in the minor key is very masculine and fits the spirit of the submarine, bursting out with power in the major key when taken up by the trombone section. The villian theme heard on track 2 near the end is very hostile-sounding but doesn't carry out long enough to be considered a theme. The use of "Eternal Father Strong To Save" by Zimmer is a nice touch to the score. As I said, Crimson Tide sounds great with suspense music but it gets tiring after a while, especially considering that the cd consists of only 5 tracks of massive size. I mostly have to skip around until I get out of the low suspense parts. Near the end of massive track 2, a chilling male chorus plays as a confrontation occurs between the main characters, one of the best parts I've heard from a chorus. At track 4, the music starts to get frantic and confrontational but a still has some boring suspense music. I recommend this to anyone who likes the score to Hunt For The Red October or masculine brassy scores, but just make sure your cd player has a fast-forward button because you'll be using it quite often. It has small great parts between tension music.

Roll Tide Hans,

This is one of my favourite albums. Crimson tide is not only a good film but a good soundtrack, on tracks 3 or 4-5 it has the navy hymn. Track 5 was placed at the start when Gene Hackman called Roll Tide and Roll Tide also pops up again in the credits area (another good choice). A very Good orchestral piece that helps bring tension in this submarine movie (which is also very good). The music also goes with the action genre. Roll Tide Hans and encore

Absolute perfection on a round, compact disc,

From one of the best composers in modern cinema, one of the best soundtracks to a movie of this kind. Bombastic, Patriotic and filled to the edge with dramatic synths and orchestras. This is top action music, in the same class as The Rock. No doubt since Hans Zimmer also worked on the Rock, signing his incredible style like no one else. There are only 5 songs on Crimson Tide, but they are very good. Alabama is totally unbelivable, 22 minutes non stop wonderful filmscore. Mutiny is bombastic and explosive, it just kicks you right into the sub and back again! Its so hard to write a good, serious review of this album. It just raises your hair and kinda takes your stomach on an epic journey, an emotionalfilled ride thru the best moments of the movie. The Rock did the same thing, however I have not yet decided which one is the best. There are other sub soundtracks out there, most well known is the equal Hunt for Red October, and comparing them is hard. Very hard. They both got their up`s and downs, but my feeling is that Crimson Tide sounds very american(NOT a bad thing!), while Red October sounds more..real. They both excel most of the competition of soundtracks on the market, but ends up staggering each others sides...just like the two main characters in the movie. I give up writing a good review for this one, just buy it and love it. It is just so fantastic.

One of the most powerful themes in movie history,
By Jeff (Boiling Springs, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crimson Tide: Music From The Original Motion Picture (Audio CD)
Hans Zimmer was just statring to become a household name to movie score fans when he made Crimson Tide. He had just done The Lion King, and actually did a very good score on Day of Thunder, which should be relaeased but that is another story.Crimson Tide is a CD that has a ton of high action music filled with percussion and horns. This is all beautifully woven together into one of the better soundtracks made in the last 10 years. While some sections may come of as slow, the main theme of this movie, which can be heard best in the last piece on this CD, is one of the most powerful and beautiful themes ever composed. This just has the sound of music composed by some of the great composers of centuries past. It starts out as a tragic theme with a lone trumpet playing, and in two minutes becomes a patriotic theme filled with horns, percussion, and a great base. For me, film music brings back memories for me and whenever I hear it, it reminds me of the Chicago Bears remarkable 2001 season. It is no coincidence that you can hear this theme used in video montages by networks like NBC, and Fox, and even the WWF. Overall, this soundtrack isn't the best ever, but the one theme alone propels it into that "must have" collection. That theme makes this soundtrack one of the better ones created in the last 10 years. Now if you are looking for more quality, a better overall product from top to bottom may be Zimmer's soundtrack to The Peacemaker. But the final piece on this CD makes this one of my favorite soundtracks to listen to. |
