Editorial Reviews

For centuries now, vampires have been forced to live in the shadows. Elric, a prince of these highly evolved creatures of the night, falls in love with a human – the very race that pushed his people into myth. This is an intolerable offense to the royal family and Elric is imprisoned for a century until a group of loyalists battle to free him from his dark cell. Together they escape to the remote mountainous terrain of North America where they begin building an army to exact revenge upon his family. A century later, in the frozen heart of winter, a group of researchers sets out to investigate a mysterious decline in the local wildlife population. Their journey takes them deep into the isolated mountain wilderness where they soon discover a terrifying truth and find themselves caught between two foes in a centuries-old battle between vampires and hunters. As they struggle to survive, they come face to face with the vampire prince, Elric, who is haunted by his own dark past. An ancient prophecy and his own anguished heart weigh heavily upon him as the vampire lord decides the fate of those who have discovered his hidden sanctum.

So, first off, this movie is super slow.

This movie just doesn't flesh out it's mythology well enough so the ending feels unexplained let alone unresolved.

Low budget vampire movies tend to... well, suck. But occasionally you stumble across a project that has true creativity and passion behind it.

And you can't accuse actor/writer/producer/actor Bryan Ferriter of lacking either creativity or passion. Despite a shoestring budget and only a handful of actors, Ferriter manages to turn "Crimson Winter" into a genuinely gripping vampire drama, set on a snowy mountainside stained by blood. But the movie is also loaded down, ironically, with too much interesting plot and backstory.

Centuries ago, the vampire prince Elric (Ferriter) believed that his kind could live in harmony with humanity, and in a prophecy of a coming savior. But then he fell in love with a human woman and didn't change her -- and his family betrayed him. In the present day, a gang of grad students head out to the mountains of Colorado, investigating why there has been a sharp drop in deer lately.

Well, you can guess: it's vampires. Specifically, it's Elric's depraved general Guiscard (Ryan Pfeiffer), who delights in murdering any humans who come too close. While the surviving students shelter with a local cadre of vampire hunters, Elric is faced with a choice between maintaining his group's safety, or letting the young humans live. Will the sorrows in his past spur him to do the right thing?

Watching "Crimson Winter" is a bit like watching the season finale of a TV show -- you feel like there's a lot of backstory you're missing, and the ending is left open for the epic events yet to come. There's a prophecy, a brewing vampiric civil war, a vampire country (I think it's in France somewhere), a struggle for the throne... there is SO much going on here, and only a brief window into what is clearly a bigger story.

PRAISE TO THE CREATORS OF THIS MOVIE -- BUT RESOURCES MAYBE TOO THIN FOR A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL PRODUCT.

THE PLOT: Vampire prince, Elric, believes in integrating with humans and fighting in their battles. However, his family does not share his views. When he falls in love with a human and refuses to turn her into a vampire, his family punishes him and imprisons him underground for a hundred years. For his loss, Elric flees to the new world (Montana) after being freed by his friends and vows vengeance on his family. The convoluted story continues in modern Montana with some cowboy vampire hunters battling with Elric's forces. Into that conflict wanders a group of environmental researchers who cannot be allowed to know their secret. However, unbeknownst to most of the researchers, they have been drawn there for a reason. There is also an element of prophecy about humans and vampires that is involved and questions of faith that plague Elric and his followers.

Despite the fact I think principle actors are talented enough and the story is worthy, I have to be fair to casual viewers. This movie just isn't strong enough in production values to meet a professional level. I think this mainly is a matter of resources and I expect many involved can continue to progress and have a future in the film industry. This production really is more for those with a particular interest in up and coming actors/directors and indy cinema even further off the beaten path. For those looking for something at least at a B movie level and were attracted to the cover, you may be disappointed.

I felt the movie suffered from poor sound mixing. Though the background music varied a little, it was so monotonous that it was like hearing a piano hit a single dour note for two hours.

So, first off, this movie is super slow. If you're looking for something fast paced and action packed, this is most definitely not for you. Secondly, this is not a big budget movie, but I can still tell a lot of time and effort went into it. That's the big reason I didn't give it two stars. The move was well shot, and it became clear very quickly that creators of the film took great pride in where and how they wanted scenes done. The story was intriguing but, unfortunately, it couldn't keep my attention. At times it was just a little too slow and the movie just seemed to drag on. This was partly due to the acting. Although it wasn't a blatant flaw in the movie, sometimes the acting would shift from being believable to being super cheesy and making laugh, even at the most serious of parts. I really believe this film could have been better if it had some more direction and a change in some of the actors/actresses. Overall, I'd say it's about 2 and 1/2 stars.

I agree that this film had a big idea and a small budget. Good fable, gorgeous actor and he is so believable in his torment, like Louis in "Interview". I do like my vampires to be a little more power full and the fight scenes were crappy. Just why does this story have the vampires staying stuck in the past? Crying out to the Gods?? They were vikings before they were turned obviously. Did they forget Valhalla? They're hiding in caves in Montana? Really. Everyone knows that the vamp that can move with the times and like it, is the vamp that makes it.Like Bill and Eric. Yay!! But still...I could fall into the lead actors eyes, so blue and deep and stay there forever. Turn me.
