First of all, despite the fact that the book is some 10 years old, I got a BRAND NEW copy through Amazon. Grundberg makes for good reading, the text is not English Torture 101 where critique-ers of photography seem to also feel it neccessary to use verbiage that is confusing and often nonsensical. In this book, the stress of impending digital photography and its effect can be felt. I accept Grundberg as having the skills and qualifications to write effectively about photography and those who feel that its their manifest destiny to write about photography should have a good look at this book before pounding anything out on a keyboard, or as I sense some to be, still working on a worn Olympia portable.
However, as with many (OK-99%)who write about photography, the base of operations appears to be New York City or some place on the West Coast, with Ansel Adams and the Grand Canyon filling the minor space in between. The outlook on photography is almost classically Eurocentric, but that is something you just have to accept. Its a good book, mine came incredibly well packaged, and I've been reading it since Friday.

The absolute worst book I have ever read! So depressing, so anti-creative that I almost didn't want to touch a camera again, or do much else for that matter. I had to take desparate, unprecedented action to break out of this funk: the only solution was to destroy it, to tear the book in two with my bare hands. I felt a whole lot better after that!
